Freedom, and the pursuit of happiness, enhanced by liberty.

I count myself to be one of the fortunate to live in Canada, a country of freedom. Yesterday, we celebrated 150 years since Confederation on July 1, 1867. I don't know of any better place to live.

To our friends south of the 49th - have a good 4th, as you celebrate 241 years since the Declaration of Independence. As a Canadian, I can't think of any better time to be in the US, than on a July 4th weekend. I especially have fond memories of Constitution Square in Philadelphia, and especially, the Liberty Bell - Proclaim liberty throughout the land unto all of the inhabitants thereof....

Both countries are models of democracy. Though, I fear an erosion of those freedoms in today's troubled world, we should still rejoice on what we have. My .02 for today.

Read it probably in the mid 60's. You can dwell and exist in a swirl of negativism, or you can rise above the sum, and pound the drum in support of your beliefs.

The book was originally a swipe at communism, written during world war 2. The communist purges of the early 30's, killing at least 10 million people, including many of the capable military Russian leaders of the time, almost resulted in tta military loss to Nazi Germany during ww2. If that had happened, our world today would have been a far different p,ace. I certainly wouldn't be here.

The swipe that the book takes at democracy would have been unnecessary.

I share your value of our societies and your fear of the erosion's you imply.

We must all keep in mind that we are countries of opportunity, and our rights are for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The expansion of these "rights" offers the illusion of Utopia, but we should fear that much more dire results may prevail.

    Happy Holidays
