Here is my advice. If you are just starting out hi-low is just fine as a counting system. Don't listen to others that you need a higher count system. First you have to master a counting system and get some wins under your belt.
It appears to me that you are sweating the large bets. Why don't you shorten you betting ramp and get your max bet out at TC5. Also using a betting spread of 1 to 12 or 1 to 16 will lower your variance. For a beginner a $300 bet can be scary. Here is a 1 to 12 betting ramp from BJRM for min $15 bet.
TC 1 $15
TC 2 $30
TC 3 $60
TC 4 $90
TC 5 $180
Disagree that a level 3 count is not worth the effort. I don't disagree that Hi-Opt II and Advanced Omega are stronger, but these counts require a side count of Aces which make them very difficult. Halves is a level 3 count and it is a single parameter count meaning it doesn't require any side count of aces as it is ace reckoned. Everybody thinks halves is difficult because it uses fractions. It is just a matter of getting use to adding fractions. I think the difficulty of halves is overrated.
Also the level of a count is determined by its tag values, but not just the value assigned to tens and aces, but the value assigned to all its tags. Halves counts the 5 as a tag of 1.5
