    Dealer Question From A Newbie!

How often do dealers know that you're counting? I just feel like it's so obvious and they'd notice something was up if I was ramping up my bets correlated with the count. I ask this question because a few months ago, I had a dealer at Sycuan rat me out, causing me to get trespassed.

Thanks for the continuous responses as it's been helping me improve my game.

I always assume the suits and the dealers know I am counting. The trick is to allow them to feel comfortable not acting. Tipping some dealers can help make them comfortable not ratting you out. The only place I have seen dealers saying anything about suspected card counters to the Floor was at one of Foxwoods casinos. That pit often has dual rate dealers working. That means they also wear the suit and work as the Floor sometimes. More often dealers give me better pen or do other things that help like finishing dealing a round after making a mistake if it makes my option stronger. But that is because I tip helpful dealers and dealers talk about how to get tips out of customers when they share tips. Some dealers are easy to train on what to do to get you to tip them while others seem oblivious.

I've had a lot of dealers let me know that they know. Some will give good pen. Some tease me a little or give advice. Usually the advice is good. In places I play a lot, I just assume everyone knows I count and just try to play within tolerance.

Thanks! That dealer at Sycuan made me super paranoid lol. This is why I'm a bit hesitant about ramping up to the correct amount when there is a crazy shift in cards. This leaves me another question though, how often/amount should I bet? I'm a redchipper, so tipping does cost quite a bit of EV. What I try to do right now, is tip a dollar every now and then, and usually when I'm near my max bets.

Are they usually blunt, and just tell you? That's awesome that they let you play.

Dependent what you mean by "know you're counting". Having been a dealer and worked with many dealers, it became apparent many dealers are, for lack of better words, basically retarded. The dealers who suspect you of counting likely suspect ploppies of counting, too. In the break room I've heard dealers say there's a card counter on their table (it was always the same dealers, the ones who think they're hot sh*t and should be running the place)....and I knew that likely wasn't true because I'd deal to those players too, and they'd go play craps and make all the worst bets on the table for hours then go play roulette and slots.

It seemed like most of the time the dealers wouldn't rat out the supposed card counter, except on occasion where the guy was being an a**hole by smoking a cigar and basically blowing the smoke directly at the dealer.

I think most don't realize you're counting, unless you're playing long sessions and being rather obvious. And those that suspect you of counting, most likely don't care enough to rat you out.

Whenever I go 5-130 at Fiesta Rancho, they don't know I'm counting. Whenever I go 10-20 everywhere else, I get trespassed.

It really depends on your ramp on how often they know. I've had plenty of dealers know that I'm counting. I've never had a specific dealer directly cause an immediate trespass. That is likely not what happened at all unless you were playing in someone's garage. If the dealer notices, chances are someone else already has or soon will. If you want to find a clueless dealer, your best bet is a young female foreigner. They have no idea why Americans do what they do with money, they used to eat crickets and lived on 20 cents a day. Yes, that's a giant generalization, but it's kinda funny...

If you play enough rounds over a long period of time in one store, they will eventually know you're a card counter/skilled player. If the dealers know, then you must also assume that the pit/management knows. At that point, none of your options are good. You must assume that backoff could happen at any time.

Best course of action at that store is to become the model customer - super nice, tip the dealers, play some other -EV games and most importantly remember: greed kills. Consider reducing both your playing time at that store and your top bet. So if the store does have a level of tolerance, you may get lucky and stay within it.

Tolerance and exposure are 2 important factors. If you are at a sweaty store and GL. i used to played at a somewhat sweaty store but i never try to pissed anyone off and i was not just counting so i got away with it for a while. Always watch /read the dealers and pit 's reaction and for the eye there is little you can do but don't ramp too obvious and stay under a certain amount to hopefully not deemed a threat (yet) .of course many members here already gave you good advices.

They usually don't outright say it, but they'll get pretty darn close sometimes.

Ive had some dealers pick up on what I am doing. I find that most of them know absolutely nothing about it besides just keeping the +1 and -1 running count (most probably cant do that either.) Keep in mind it is also much easier to pick a counter off at pitch games vs shoes. I think the advice above about assuming the store knows is a good one. Stay under the tolerance level, be a person the staff and other players enjoy having around, tip lightly but often. A good idea is to pick up a level 2 count so you can milk out more EV at lower spreads. With good games you can pull off a lot more with lower spreads vs a level 1.

As with most things blackjack, it depends.

Most dealers do not have a clue. They are still telling ploppies the wrong basic strategy plays. I have had dealers that know and don't care, never had one to rat me out that I am aware of. Being cordial (tips?) to a knowledgeable dealer may be considered.

Pit bosses however deserve more attention. Dealers job is to deal and pay correctly, pits job is more about game protection. Relationships matter.

There are ways to disguise a spread (did not say eliminate!) without giving up EV. Short sessions (<1 Hour) are always MOST IMPORTANT.
Luck is nothing more than probability taken personally!
