Where is middle ground for Indices and Basic Strategy?

We understand if you play B.J you must know the B.S and if you are counter you must know the indices of your count. However in actual casino playing there are many things distract you and your (lack of) ability to do quick, accurate math so the accuracy of your index play is easily off the mark. Also Don S and Snyder and Jacobson had said about Indices vs B.S which tend (as way I understand) to place B.S more importance than Indices.
What is your take on this subject?
