First Time Chewed Out by Cashier for Not Tipping

Not too long ago, I was coming home from an extended blackjack trip and I made a stop at Oneida casino in Green Bay. When I went to cash out my chips which was something like $742 (amount changed to protect the innocent) the cashier made a quick remark. It was something like "what no tipping." I took this to mean what am I doing with $2 at the cashier window when I should of given the two bucks to the dealer. I have been called on the carpet many times for being a cheap bastard, but this is the first time I have been called out by a cashier for not tipping.

By the way, I did tip the dealer the lone 50 cent chip I had.

When you tried cashing in $742, the cashier wanted you to return the $2 to her as a tip. I have seen people tip the cashier.

In my neck of the woods, the only tip jars out fir cashiers are at the Indian casinos. I wouldn't give them .02. One if the charity crew should tried hustle a tip from me, which they are not supposed to do. I chewed the lady out big time.

A tip for giving me my money?
Zee, I need some advice. Would you tip a cashier for a hand jib at the cash cage?
    (Purposely misspelled something)

So ... you purposely insulted the dealer [a Service Worker]

by egregiously toking "next to nothing?"

    That is considered a grotesquerie.

I am not a scrooge, although frugal is not a negative concept. In restaurants, if I receive good service (timely, friendly, extra touches) then they will get at least 20%. If I am eating on a comp, they may get more.

Now, I do tip dealers, reluctantly, if I think it is needed for cover or I think it may elicit a positive for the game (pen?). Otherwise, I am appalled at the unmitigated nerve of casinos to under pay dealers (employees) and to expect the people they are fleecing with mathematical regularity to supplement their employees wages. The only thing that is not illegal that a dealer can do to warrant tips is be nice and give better pen and the pen is irrelevant to anyone but an AP.

What in the hell can a cashier do that is not illegal to warrant a tip? I would think courteous and friendly service are a part of their job description? Can you spell collusion?

Good post Stealth but some could argue the legality of a dealer changing penetration in exchange for tips, as well.

Don't tome on the cut card. Wait a few rounds and then put out a coup,e of dealer tokes. Solves the possible problem of implied collusion.

This was posted by Dog Hand a few years back and provides wise guidance for tipping.

Dog Hand's Tipping Guidelines to Ensure Longevity

    20 to 1 Spread,

Although exceptions to the rule do exist, dealers are generally content with a tip of 20-30% of your "color-up", along with a bet "for the boys" of one chip color below what you're betting per round: thus, if you're betting green, that's a red; if you're betting black, that's a green, etc.

Example: you buy in for $500 and flat-bet 1 green (plus a red "for the boys") per round. After 100 rounds, you color up your remaining 8 greens, and toss the dealer another $50 (25% of your $200 "color-up"): note that the "color-up" tip is NOT dependent on whether you yourself won or lost (that's immaterial to the dealer), but rather on the amount that you "color-up" at the end. Thus, your total tip is $550 on $2,500 of action (actually $3,000 of action, if you count the bets "for the boys").

This tipping level will usually (but not always: some people are greedy) keep you in the good graces of the dealer and the pit.

Now don't forget about the cashier! You have to give something to "the babes with the bucks" as you cash out your remaining $150: $20 (a nice Jackson, a.k.a. a "double sawbuck") should be adequate to ensure they never short-change you. Now your tipping has reached $570.

However, these tips will have NO effect on the EITS, since they don't share in the dealers' and cashiers' tips, so you should be sure to stop by the surveillance room (you'll have to get directions from a guard, so keep $10 ready "for the guys with guns"), then "slip 'em a Benjy" to keep "the crew with the cameras" happy as well, thereby increasing your tipping amount to $680.

This will leave you with $20, so you can give $10 to "the team with the towels" (that is, the restroom attendant: if you can't find him (or her), just leave a Hamilton on the bathroom sink), and your final $10 can go to the valet for not actually wrecking your car. If you didn't arrive by car, give the valet $10 anyway for "the car jockeys."

Thus, to recap, you bought in for $500, gave $700 in tips, and left with... nothing. Keep doing this and you'll be golden at that casino forever.

    Hope this helps!

Lucky I come from Australia, where tipping is neither expected nor legal (in casinos).

Speaking of Oneida, I was playing their single deck game and a guy at the table got a pair of sevens against the dealer face. He asked the dealer if he should split them. Of course, a split would be bad when the dealer was showing a strong hand. The dealer said no just hit it. I felt like saying no just stand because in a single deck game its basic strategy to stand with a pair of sevens vs 10, but I kept my mouth shut. Poor guy hit it and busted. Sometimes free advice is costly especially if its wrong.
