    Betting size affecting decision making

Has anyone notice the betting size in playing blackjack would affect one's decision making? The bigger the bet, the more likely I would made irrational mistake, violate the basic strategy, lost control, etc......(That maybe the reason why the casino welcome the high roller). I would like to hear from the AP that how to overcome that.

Are you counting? You make higher bets when you are more likely to violate BS because it is the most profitable decision. You should always make the most profitable decision with the info you have. If you are not counting that means play BS. Do you like it better to lose more of your bets but not bust on some of those extra losses. When you double or split with a big bet out you increase the chances of losing your bet (except with some splits) but you are maximizing you win or minimizing your loss for that play over time. Unless you are a ploppy over betting their available funds you should follow the correct play to double or split. If you have over bet you can make the argument you are better off making the wrong choice. If that is the case you already made a mistake when you made your bet.

To answer your question don't over bet and trust the math period, end of discussion. If you can't do that maybe a game where you have to make decisions isn't for you.

    mirando,

The key word here is irrational, that means you must use a base unit that you feel comfortable with to the extent you do not make -ev plays because you are playing the money and not the cards. Play within your bank and also you comfort zone, to do otherwise is foolish and dangerous, to your EV and emotions.

To overcome this I suggest dropping down to a lower level game if possible. You MUST overcome your thinking when it comes to chip value. You have to think in terms of units with no regard to monetary value. IMO this is a big step in taking control. It's how the poker pros treat their money. That's one of the reasons they can make moves and call bets and make it look like they have ice water in their veins. They learned to disregard chip value in relation to real world costs.

i myself have overcome this for the most part as when I win I win an average of 10-15 units so whenyouput it in perspective it does not matter (other than value) if 8 Winn at roughly the same rate. I know someone will have something to say about this, but you must separate the outside value of that same chip from the real world.

Counting takes a lot of time, patience, practice, self-control, and learning. You need to have the control to do exactly what you're supposed to do (trust the math) by laying down those big bets, doubling or splitting, etc. This comes much easier if you have a proper bankroll and are playing for the long-run. If you have a small bankroll, self-control is difficult because it's pocket money not an investment.

I can identify with that. I had been spreading $10-$120 at games and trying to move up. I was playing $25 min., put out $200 on a positive count, received two 8"s against a 10 card. I thought for a while and then split them, ended up with $400 on the table. Received a ten card for 18 on one hand, received a 3 and now was faced with a double down situation. I doubled down and had $600 on the table. I received a 7, the dealer had a 2-3 (can't remember which), received another card, got a 21 and the whole table lost!!! Moreover, in the excitement, I lost the count as well. The count was still high and I should have had another max bet out but I went down to minimum, played another hand and left.

Not only had I lost my biggest amount, $600, on a single hand but everyone on the table thought I was dumb for splitting, dumb for doubling down. Had I not split on the two 8's and stood on the 16, the dealer would have busted. The comments, mutterings, looks of disgust and the fact that every single person at the table lost because of my choice made me feel awful.]

Luckily, I posted on the BJ21 Green pages and some great AP's there gave me words of reassurances that I did the right thing and much encouragement. I am still learning, will still split 8's and double down when the count requires it and learning to feel more comfortable with more monies out.

The biggest issues are splitting (8's against a 10, doubling down on soft 18 against a bust card, hitting 15 against a 10, 13 against a 2 and such when we have max. money out.

Wrong. THEY lost and will continue to lose because THEY chose using THEIR own volition to sit THEIR asses down to play a game where THEY'RE doomed to ultimately lose.

Them losing any round of blackjack should no more affect you than watching a car drive by. Never feel bad. They're free to visit the movies instead of a casino if they can't handle losing a hand.

I'm sure that's obvious, but nonetheless, be aggressive in this thinking if being blamed for the ill effects of other people's vice is affecting your game.

I feel poppy terrorism is one of the most aggravating and distasteful aspects of this game...

No offense and nothing personal but the word "terrorism" probably shouldn't be used so loosely.

No offense and nothing personal but anyone who would take his comments out of context is too politically correct for me.

How about information gathering affects betting size in which decision making can be determined if the result was positive or negative for the player.

Zeeb, you did what you're supposed to do in that situation (split 8's vs 10, and DD the 11vT).

That's why we have things called INDICES. If the count is positive and the matchup is 13v2, you STAY. If the count is negative (same matchup), you hit. Generally speaking, you'll be STAY'ing on your 13v2's when you have big bets out because there's a correlation between strategy and count. But, if the TC is +4, you get a 13, dealer gets a 2 up, and everyone else has TT, the count might turn negative by the time you're up to play.
