Thread: How to train deck estimation?

Some are probably better at it than others , I think anybody that practice enough should be good at it unless there is something wrong with their vision or the way they see things. One can always use unbalanced count to make it easier .Accurately estimating to a quarter deck is not that easy imo. I used to just glance quickly at the discard but then realized i was quite far off . Then i took a bit longer and were getting more accurate. I have stopped playing 6decks for awhile and it affected my deck estimation accuracy.

This is really funny! From this thread I have learned to point towards the dealer and then give him the thumbs up when estimating decks! I think I might try that today! lol!

It almost goes with my avatar too! To match my avatar, I guess I need to come up with some way to measure while pretending to be angry and pointing!

From the tip of my petzel to the bottom of my left nut is.........hang on a sec - a naked lady is sitting down - have to redo those measurements.

Personally, I like option b - about 1 deck per 4 chips stacked. Adjust for chip width and casino card thickness. More consistent than option previously described

I am thankful to have found all these suggestions so easily. I think that, putting this all together, I and others can have a nice tool kit for practice/real world. For me, it's nice to have four or five of these tricks and tips in my arsenal. In fact, by reading it I came up with two more ideas. The fact that there's so much relativity among different stores' decks and discard tray setups makes this thread an easy demystifier of the different situations I see, some of which seem easy to read and others not so much.

I have a kind of superfluous question: Does use and humidity factor in to how high cards sit or do casinos generally switch cards out before this is an issue? The reason I ask is my used cards with the hole punched in 'em sure seem effin' TALL.

It depends on the casino. Top end high volume casinos generally switch cards out daily. Small middle of nowhere casinos may never switch them out. Using never as a relative rather than absolute term.

Shoot T-three.............here at some of the Native American/Indian Casinos..........they use plastic cards. And they actually WASH them/CLEAN them rather than replace them. Are they STICKY sometimes!!!! So much so that even the dealers complain. And it's NOT unusual for two cards to be dealt at the same time...........which obviously brings the floor into the situation.

Where/who should you ask for used decks? Pit crew? Will they give them free?

As long as we are on this ridiculous thread, I knew a guy who measured from the tip of his schmekl to his Baitsim. His eyeball measurements were off, primarily due to his inability to properly estimate 6 inches.

Regardless, from this auspicious beginning came the theories which eventually evolved to the regaled underground FBM ASC.

Most places I play they go to security. They have so many that they will often give you a bunch of decks that have a hole in the middle of the cards or the corner cut down or some other way to distinguish them from cards they haven't retired yet.
