I'm pretty sure I heard that at the least, Don had friends who played with him and overall they were using consolidation betting, or "grifter's gambit". When the count got high, his friends or teammates or whatever they were, would stop playing leaving him to play heads up in positive shoes, but they would help eat cards in negative shoes.
He may have knew of the optimal departure point for using the loss rebate, but Munchkin said he obviously didn't use it as in at least one session he won $5 million which is a lot more than he would have if he was playing optimally. He would have stopped sooner than that if he was solely playing the loss rebates optimally.
And Don is definitely an AP, he was a couple votes away from being voted into the BJ hall of fame at this years blackjack ball. I doubt that group of APs would vote in a civilian into the hall of fame.
