    Heat or no heat?

I have never experienced any heat from my local joints over the years, until maybe recently.

    Casino A:
The pit is super friendly and fun at all times. In fact, I even love going there to chat with the dealers and pit. I have been building my bankroll for years now, so I decided to finally hit the $25 table. I had no trouble with anyone there and was down about 12 units when I decided to go eat. I saw in the restaurant one of the hosts and asked if I could get a food comp (when you ask the pit bosses, they have to get permission from the hosts so I just cut out the middle-man).
It was a busy night so he went to take care of my comp requests along with others. He returned about 10 minutes later. He handed a comp to people at another table and then came to my table with the comp in his hand. I was alone. He said “oh hey ______.” He was very light hearted. He then sat down at the table with me and he looked me straight in the face and said with the most serious tone and facial expressions that he could muster “We need to have a little talk.” To my credit, I did not flinch at all. I quickly came back with a pleasant “Sure! What’s wrong?” He said after a very brief but well timed pause “you’re losing too much damn money out there!” He then laughed to indicate that he was just kidding around and gave me the comp. He was as light-hearted as ever after that. He gave me the comp and left as he waved at others in the restaurant that knew him.

I thought that maybe this was his way of saying “we know what you’re doing. Don’t overdo it or you’re out.” Was this heat? Am I overthinking this?

    Casino B:
I won’t mention the rules here, but they are excellent. Pen is very generous. A girl who used to be a dealer is now a pit boss. We have always joked around when she was a dealer. I do happen to know that she wants to move up in the casino which is why she decided to be a pit boss. I even hung out with her at another casino once when I happened to see her.
One night I was playing 2D. I was losing. She came over and saw me losing and rooted for me slightly (like pit bosses do). I like for them to know when I am down, so I said “yeah, I’m down a little.” She said, “that’s okay, I know you’re “advantaged.”” She then walked off. I decided not to play in there for a while. I went back in not long ago. She checked me in (players card), and she said “have fun ______!”

Was this heat or just a way of saying that she knows what I am doing? Or maybe it was just a joke and meant nothing (she is a little silly at times).

I realize that you need to actually be there to make a judgment, but some theories as to whether or not veiled threats were being conveyed would be nice. What do you think?

Firstly, she is NOT a Pit Boss. Learn the lingo. She is a "floor person", technically, a game supervisor.
Secondly, it is a dead certainty that she has "made you" as a card counter. What you must understand
is that she eventually will realize that the only way that she can earn kudos on her job performance is
by "outing" card counters. As friendly as she may be toward you - that means NOTHING. I have seen
this scene a hundred times in my decades of playing professionally. This "never ends well."

    Here are my thoughts.

A - Not heat. Hosts don't make player skill determinations. If he saw something in the system indicating that you were a possible counter, and he wanted to give you a friendly warning, he would have probably been more direct, I believe.

B - I don't like the use of the term "advantaged". Seems very specific. Not enough to know for sure, but you might want to avoid her pit for a while just to be safe. If you are both single, and you occasionally see her out of her casino you could also ask her out. Might be some interesting info to be gained from her pillow talk (just let her vent about her day, women love that). That would also give you a natural reason not to play in her pit....

    Wow. Sorry to offend.

Remember, I have been playing there for years. When someone asks the dealer for something, they respond with "let me get you a pit boss." In this casino, this is pretty much anybody in the pit that is not a dealer. I always thought it odd that they used that word, but obviously I go with it.

I know you're right Flash, but in this casino, it's pretty much a poTAYto/poTAHto situation when it comes to this. I'll be sure to get the terms correct though when speaking to you. Thanks for your take on the rest of the info.

For casino B, that is definitely my thinking as well. Such an odd word to use if that were not what she meant by it. We flirt a lot. I have definitely thought of becoming an advantage "player" outside of the casino as well. That's an idea!
For casino A, I hope you're right. After I processed everything in my mind (facial expression, the table I played that night, what I found out about the host, etc.), I was at a 50/50. I just couldn't tell if this was a threat in disguise.

Duh. I know that. This is why I didn't go back for a while. I do not perceive my friendliness to her to be some sort of "get out of jail free card."

I have a saying about casinos and AP's. They will love you until they hate you. Casinos are like that love struck girl who can't get enough of you and will never let you go.... and then she finds out that you had a threesome with her sister and her best friend, and she instantly becomes your mortal enemy.

Except that in the case of casinos, the "love" was never real in the first place. Just a convincing act on their part.

Wow. I think that's the best I have ever heard it said! May I quote you?

Prefer the other famous defense that a cheating man uses when caught in the sack with his paramour du jour:

Are you going to believe me or your lying eyes?

To the OP - interesting post - thanks.

Those of us that play at local stores regularly have to be a bit paranoid about what they think of us. My conclusion thus far at my local store is that the floor people that know me well, must know by now that I'm counting. The issue becomes tolerance level, management style and all of the intangibles that extend longevity.

To me - it's just a game, so I don't care too much about a back-off. But if it does come, I hope they don't 86 me. I'll beg them to at least let me play craps once and a while.

Perhaps I should consider myself fortunate that my "local" stores are 4.5 hours away. I recognize many individuals in the pit, but only a few recognize me. And it's still fuzzy to them, the "I've seen you before" look. I notice the dealers that move from store to store. I converse with dealers about who retired, left, moved etc.

Won't be doing that anymore as was eventually playing unrated being inevitable...
