    What are the chances?

We all know cashing out chips is not always the smart thing to do, due to the EITS tracking your play. What if you save your chips and the next time you come back maybe a week or a month later, the chips have changed. Can you still cash out? Or are you out of the money? What if there was a burglary and they were forced to change chips? Are you still allowed to cash out your chips or will they deny you and say those chips are old and we cant take that? That's always been my fear for not holding onto my chips for the future. Someone please clarify this.

Venetian/Palazzo changed their chips a few years ago after a rumored robbery and they gave everyone a deadline to cash in old chips before the chips were declared dead (I think they gave 6-12 months, and it was only for either black chips and up or purple and up).
You just had to prove you played enough to justify your cash out and provide ID.

If you always play unrated, ask trusted friends/relatives who play in the same casino, and can prove they played sufficient enough, to cash out for you.

Rules vary from casino to casino, but it's going to be tougher to cash out $500 and up because most people don't hoard those chips.

The law requires casinos to give at least 6 months notice before chips are completely dead. Networking is important. Everyone here and on other sites should take the time to post an alert to their fellow players when an announcement is made that chips are going out of circulation. If you only go to Vegas once a year it's probably a good idea to cash most everything out (or sell them to another AP) before you leave town or make sure you're in Vegas at least every 6 months.

The time limit may be different for tribal casinos. A local place changed chip designs; I think they gave 120 days notice on the last day of redemption.

Good idea on the alert; and if the place is out in the sticks (and you don't want to flag yourself as local to there) you might even take advantage of the anonymous posting feature.
May the cards fall in your favor.

What if you play unrated, how would they contact me? Am i just out of sheer luck? Is that one of the risks of playing unrated? I guess so. Glad I asked this question, always a weird feeling about not cashing in my chips.

If you give them none of your information, then clearly they can't (and won't) be contacting you. It'll be on you at that point. If they're a regulated casino they must give notice before changing the chips (6 months I believe which was stated prior in the thread). I'm not as familiar with tribal casinos and their standard operating procedures. Probably best to just blind call from a safe number and ask them? No matter what it's got to be 3-6 months I'd presume. So if you're planning on returning in a few weeks, you should be fine. Good rule of thumb if you don't have a players card would be anywhere you plan on keeping chips you should also plan to be stopping back in within a few weeks or so.

Not good to live by general guidelines because what if the 6 month notice started 5 and a half months ago and i decided to keep the chips and return in a couple of weeks, the chips would be changed by the time i got there. Thanks for the advice though.

If you're going to keep chips from any casino a responsible AP would anonymously call in to ask the casino these questions to ensure they're not losing money due to any transitions like this. Or, you could just simply ask when calling "where do you post your notifications about these things?" Perhaps on their site, etc... Then you could simply check in the future without any interactions. It's on us to know since all they have to do is issue their 6 month warning period.

I believe they change the chips and announce the 6-month deadline at the same time. Anytime after the chip-change (within the 6-month deadline), dealers should not be paying people in "old" chips.

The way I see it, they usually post a notice sign at the cage.

That qualifies as posting notice in a conspicuous public place.

They might also send out notice in their mailers and take out a tiny classified ad in a local newspaper.
May the cards fall in your favor.
