During NFR, don't forget to get yourself 2 bottles of bud light beer, and a nice tin of Grizzly Wintergreen. Once you finish off the first beer, you can use the empty bottle as a spitter. Don't be scared to let some spit hang outta your mouth and drool a bit on your fine rodeo jacket or even let some dangle onto the felt. Get a nice cowboy hat, a big ass belt buckle that makes it uncomfortable to sit down while wearing. Top it off with a pair of boots and a somehow-decent-looking pair of Wrangler jeans.

But seriously, don't think a mechanic is a great idea. Sure, they may get paid well (I have no idea?)....but what does the pit think of a dirty mechanic? Would you expect a mechanic to be betting 2x$250? I imagine a mechanic buying in for $30, playing $5 or $10 a hand. If he loses he buys in another $30 or maybe $40. After maybe $150 or $200 he's out of money, orders a shot of Wild Turkey and a bottle of coors and calls it a night.
If you wanna spread 5-40 on a pitch game, dress up as a mechanic.

Here is my advice.
If you are looking for longevity at a particular store, then spend a few hours there without playing, but on the shifts that you intend to play. While there, note the game rules, pen by dealer, any dealer vulnerabilities (excessive mistake rate, hole card issues, etc). Note the PC's that seem new, nervous, friendly, disinterested, just plain assholes, etc. Then look at the people who are playing for the stakes that you want to play, especially the ones that are moving their bets around. Study them and figure out how you can look as much like them as possible to the specific PC(s) that cover the games you will be playing. After this investment of time, you will know whether the store is worth a return visit at all, and if so, which tables / dealers to target and how to dress and act.
If you don't have the time to invest in scouting / education, then just do a quick hit and run, and make sure you don't color up to any big denom chips.
