Locals play regularly at low stakes and won't play junk games. There is a lot of competition in the Vegas market for local customers. On the strip everything is owned by 1 or 2 companies and a majority of the customers aren't in town to gamble. A majority of the customers at the locals casinos are there to gamble.

Ha, I've always had the impression that there were plenty of counters like this--people who probably wouldn't be gamblers if they weren't APs. I'm sure lots of people could relate.

For the other side of the coin, I have always been a gambler at heart and had been playing blackjack far back as I was legally allowed to. I could have easily become a degenerate with a problem but as one who seeks the light, I found a single ray and followed it knowing more and more, as the light grew brighter, salvation would be at the other end. I've never had a 'gambling problem' but I have had some warning signs that I thankfully heeded. I'm grateful that I started gambling earlier than later. Not having much money to gamble at all (jobless, poor student) was the golden dam that ensured the situation never could have cascade and spiral downwards.

I was going to be a gambler no matter what, but I wanted to do it right! I reckon if I tried to do poker right I would probably end up a degenerate like most of them (even the successful ones) end up being

Lady Variance is with all of us, don't avoid her gaze because you're afraid how she might act. Embrace her as a familiar friend rather than giving her the cold shoulder. She will find you, wherever you go, whether gambling or not.

ditto. Just to clarify the math. If the side bet was true odds, then being paid 10:1 or 11 for 1 would have a 1/11 win rate. (for 9:1/10f1 it's 1/10). 11 losses to 1 win, being paid 10:1, gives a 8.33% chance of winning a given hand as well as a 8.33% house edge.

Embrace Lady Luck? Lady Luck or Lady Variance, whichever you want to call her, has no feelings. She's just as much good luck as bad. As such, she is not a good prospect for a long-term relationship. In the end she is a net zero. I'm looking for a Lady who is partial to myself.
