Thread: My first backoff!

OK, guess I should clear some things up. To the one asking why I'm "whining" & said I have a "bad act", I'm neither a whiner nor actor, I posted here looking for suggestions to improve my game, not snarky comments. To the one who said I might be a liar because I committed the horrible sin of only having 12 posts, well believe it or not there are some of us who have other things to do than post online! and the one who said DD is a trap in "that town" I never named the town. To the one who suggested my spread/ play is too mechanical, yes you may have a point there. I usually do play 2 units off the top on 6D, but not in DD with my modest bankroll. As far as playing unrated, I started doing that a few years ago when I decided to use "hit & run" tactics (short sessions) & playing more pitch. I'm know playing unrated raises eyebrows some, but it has worked for me pretty well so far as this was my first backoff. Yes I agree it was a "ridiculous backoff" as Bodarc said, of course I knew I'd get backed off someday, but I expected it to be at one of the places in Vegas, Reno, or one of the other towns I play more often than this one. I'm not real worried about it, but the reason I like card counting is I enjoy the challenge, so I'm always looking for ways to improve my game. I appreciate those offering helpful advice, I think I'll make a few adjustments, such as a strict once-per-day limit per property. Won't go back to that town for 6 months or so, their blackjack is mediocre anyway, maybe in fall as that's usually good fishing.

    Hi Tex

I don't think I would do that. It has taken this long for you to be backed off and to cut back your playing on all other properties just because you got BO'd at a sweat joint is kind of like backing yourself off.

I would just make sure I'm not giving any tell tail signs and keep blasting away at them. You are playing a conservative game as it is.

Just wait until you get backed off while losing. It's a complete slap in the face.

Just make sure not to back yourself off. Blast away at other places.

Reread my post, don't get defensive about it. I think I know where you played.

I've been counting for less than a year. So I guess I can't comment from that perspective, but from a business perspective I would say the casino's decision to alienate a player over a $65 profit in 2 days is beyond ridiculous. They have no idea who the guy is or how damaging he could be to their casino. He could be a senator's nephew or who knows what. To risk it over $65 is absurd. 1 minute of electrical power costs more than that at a casino. Something's off.

Yes I agree its ridiculous, but then casino employees aren't always the rocket scientists! Ohbevave, I said I would stay away from that town a while, I'm not cutting back on overall play at all. And bodarc, the answer to your fishing question is none of the above, I've been catching redfish & sharks there, so that makes the town fairly obvious of course!

Your bet spread can't even do damage at a $5 table especially considering a count where you can leverage a max bet only occurs maybe 20% of the time maybe? I played just this morning and finally hit a good shoe where I could fire out $400 bets. Did it twice and not a peep from anyone.

at your spread the casino is still gonna take your money and that doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand.

Stop replying to texnav. He is either a liar or a troll.

I tell you what is really weird for me and probably just that I don't realize how bad I was. I counted and played a 16ish to 1 spread in vegas and Atlantic City, around five years ago on $15 dollar tables. I didn't play indexes, just basic. I must have been pretty awful, I never got backed off. I had three blackjacks straight after coming back from a $2k deficit to (after the run at the blackjacks) was a $2k gain. I checked out two shoes after the blackjack hands, which were at my max bet and tipped the dealers $100 bucks. The pit boss told me the dealers appreciated my generosity and they were looking forward to seeing me again.

Either I was so bad, I was unrecognizable as a counter (completely possible) or things in the last five years have significantly changed. I won in Vegas too but bounced from place to place and sessions were short. But I've played for 12 hours or more while counting and varying my bet five years ago and have never heard a peep on reds...

One thing I do do that Ive never seen written especially when playing a longer session, is I'd pretend to be falling asleep at the table. Letting my head nod while the dealer called for my action. I figured if they thought you were falling asleep, you probably weren't a counter. In a negative count, I would do this and then when the dealer "woke me up to bet" I'd finish the hand and say Jesus, I'm going to go splash some cold water in my face and appologize to the table and leave for a bit......

Smoking also works for me as an excuse to leave. I'd ask dealer how many hands were left and say somehting like, just enough time for me to catch a smoke and get back for the next shoe...run for the closest exit, light up and come back.

I'm not a bad player... I just play cover on every hand!

Now that's funny right there.(I don't care who ya are!) I've got one guy telling me my response to my first backoff should be to spread more aggressively, makes all kinds of sense! And a "genius" accusing me of lying, I can't imagine why on earth a person would lie about a thing like that, though I guess there's a lot of "keyboard warriors" on this site that have nothing better to do than "stir sh*t" Now I'm quite happy with the modest profit I've made with my spread, and longevity is very important to me so I believe I'll keep my spread as it is. As for you brave keyboard warriors who seem to want to stir up drama from a simple attempt to get helpful advice, it reminds me of an old joke about another retired Navy CPO, who went to a job interview & the interviewer asked "What is your biggest weakness" to which the chief replied "Honesty". The interviewer said "I don't think honesty is a weakness" & the chief replied "Son I don't give a sh*t what you think!"

I don't think I saw anyone telling you to spread more aggressively, if I'm wrong, feel free to point that out. I did see someone offer you advice. Just because this place backed you off, isn't a reason you need to be even more conservative. If you were playing hit and run, in a place you probably won't go to very often, with an already conservative play style, why do you need to 'back off yourself' by hurting your already marginal (no offense) win rate and limiting opportunity's.

As to people calling you either a liar or a troll. I'm a bit shocked myself. In all honesty, I'm surprised that this kind of thing happened here. I have been on this website since November and haven't ever seen a new poster hassled like this. I have always thought of this website as one where the culture doesn't breed such juvenile responses.

We could at least give him the benefit of the doubt, and if anything, we could at the very least state our incredulity in a more civil manner. I hope we haven't scared you away from the site texnav.

P.S. using the quote feature might make it easier to follow your responses to others instead of just yelling out "and to that guy who did that I say to you..."
