I have learned to maximize the EV out of all situations in life. For example, even something as small as not feeding a parking meter because you have the determined in the long run that you will spend more feeding the meter than on a ticket.

I have learned that you have to make decisions in life, and that what is best for you may not be good for someone else, but you need to do it anyway or you're doing yourself a disservice.

I have learned that I will be happy with the way I look when I'm old, because at age 25 now everyone says they thought I was 18. If I weren't an AP I would wear my ID around my neck in casinos.

Adapting Lao Tzu's wise words to blackjack -- most of the time the journey of a thousand miles starts with many missteps.

I noticed my worst blackjack-missteps have taken place when very -tired , one night stands out ; (going on third hour of counting at second casino that night , woke up that day at like 6am , was playing blackjack close to midnight ) i wanted insurance , and without saying it aloud , I just kinda half motioned something with my hand that the dealer didn't see , and reached for chips , "insurance closed" ... of course he had it ....I think late that night I mistook soft 15 for hard15, stood against a 3 or 4 , exhausted I don't even recall if this was the case ... I could've had a hard 15 , and played it correct after all ....that's just it , I couldn't say..., playing tired I noticed that i was making more mistakes than my first few visits ....that's a lesson learned ,
lets make another quote for this : "when tired one should just sleep ..."
    who would a thunk it?

Persistence, and looking at the long term instead the short term.

Even when you do everything right, you can still be a loser.

    This, for the most part.

That and the many range of emotions observed from "ploppy" play.

I learned that every thing is a thousand thousand details that tell a different story. Reality can be read - the + and -'s of existence splayed out like the wongs of a dove.

Stealth, I'm hoping you meant "wings of a dove".

These are my favorite, but to put my spin on it, I feel like learning to beat blackjack has helped show me that the powers that be will do all they can to consolidate and keep that power away from the people. Counting and taking the casino for money is an interesting feeling in part because it's a form of rebellion against the system, kind of like a grey area between the law and morality. Most people agree counting isn't "illegal" but it's funny that casinos still wield the power to bar counters so they can maintain profits predicated on the "ignorance" for lack of a better word, of the masses. To me, this is a common thread that runs through a lot more than just the gambling business, though gambling is a very strong example.

Also, from a statistics standpoint, it's helped reinforce the idea that limited personal experience and anecdotal evidence don't amount to much in the grand scheme of things, and unfortunately many people live their entire lives based on those things. Separating selective memory and bias from 'fact' is a surprisingly present dilemma even in blackjack. I like the input about variance, but I haven't played long enough to really understand that, so I took a more abstract route. Good thread Seagull.

Tired is part of it. Hunger is worse for me.

    I can push through tired.

So, when hungry, eat, and allow one's blood sugar levels to return to normal.
May the cards fall in your favor.

    Cards aren't memorable. People are.
