Suppose a recreational player visits LV for a weekend and plays 1,000 hands, flat-betting, playing basic strategy with some errors, six-deck, H17, DAS. The range of results with 95% confidence would be:
-82 to 62 units
OK, suppose it’s 6:5 BJ?
-95 to 47 units
Frankly, despite the enormous hit 6:5 makes to the odds, the average player wouldn’t even notice. And, he wouldn’t want to spend his weekend searching out a better game, or risk playing at substantially greater stakes to see better rules.
6:5 is criminal in my mind. But, it’s not so simple to explain this to someone that plays an occasional weekend, as luck has so much more to do with his results.

Most players notice the first time they are shorted on a BJ by being paid 6:5. That is pretty hard not to notice and only an idiot wouldn't understand what that means. If you bet $15 a hand and get $18 instead of $22.50 (a $4.50/BJ difference)and after Norm's 1000 hands get about 50 BJ's they lost $225 on those hands during their weekend trip.
Apparently, it is not as intuitively obvious as T3 believes. A friend of mine is a CPA and tax atty. When he told me about a recent trip to Vegas and described where he played, I asked, "aren't those games paying 6:5 on blackjack?" His answer was, "Yes, so what? How often do you get a BJ?" Of course I answered once every 21 hands.
I'm with T-Three on this one. BUT there ARE a lot of idiots out there. It's not that they DON'T notice however, it's just that in our society MOST folks don't want to rock the boat. They can sure tell the difference between being paid $15 on their $10 bet v being paid only $12. The problem is they will NOT express their disdain for it; continue playing and figure there is nothing to do about it. I don't believe most folks playing any games know what odds are or payback percentages or house edge, etc. Try explaining the difference that single zero or double zero roulette wheels make in payback and you might get a "glazed look" in their eyes.
But I think that most people notice the reduction in payback on blackjack. They just don't know what they can do about it. Vegas was able to take advantage of the general idea that "single deck" was so much better than multi deck, that they slid this one in on EVERYONE over time. I just CAN'T believe how many people will play MULTI-deck that pays 6-5, too....or now.

I've never been to Vegas but plan on going. It sounds like it's not even worth it the way everyone is talking. I've never seen a 6:5 table but if I did I would loudly voice my opinion and maybe cause a scene. The casinos steal people's money already there is no need for 6:5. The general public needs to be made aware of the issue imo.

High limit players generally won't play crappy games. The way a casino can assure its own death is to turn the high limit games to crap or use shuffle machines or anything else these players don't like. They know the can find a different casino that will value their business. Many will negotiate their own rules if they play at high enough bets.
There sure were driving around Long Island today. traffic.jpeg
