That makes me wonder how many letters they send out along with a check for an underpayment.

I was playing the other day and a guy in a suit came out of nowhere to tell the dealer to give this guy $200 more because a few hands earlier they had underpaid him. Kinda cool but at the same time scary because it showed they were seriously tracking our bets with the cameras. Kind of funny they'd write you about $200, must be a small time casino. That or they're watching you and wanted to send a message.

I would have sent back a letter saying "Too bad, so sad. Have a nice day!"

... But for real, what is the proper protocol for this?

They won't (knowingly) let him play until he repays the money. Other than that, nothing; unless they want to file a lawsuit for the $200.

I heard of one case where a player stalled for a while then ended up repaying the couple grand the casino wanted back. After paying he was immediately 86'd, lol.

If they want your continued business they would negotiate some comps probably equal to the amount in question. Explain the situation to a host first. According to your twitter you won over $10k so you were putting down enough action to justify that kind of negotiation.

Might as well ask for the $400 in comps too, you might get it.

The letter doesn't ask for the money back. It's a request for a phone call. They actually may not ask for the money, believe it or not.

It may not directly ask for the money back, but I imagine they would say something to the effect of he's not allowed to play there again until he pays them $200, just like Joss said.

Would anyone contact a lawyer about a letter like this? What if the player chooses not to respond?

$200 can't be chased very far by anyone. I'd comply with their request for a call and see what they want to tell you. It could be anything from a demand to return the money to just a "we know what you got away with and it can't happen again" or somewhere in between like no more BJ.
Agree to nothing on the phone (presume you're being recorded whether you are or not).
