Was Tom's bike a Husqvarna possibly? Norm's mention of the "Indian" brand name caught my attention for the following reason.
In the late sixties I was working in the parts dept. at a large Chevy dealership and I bought a high performance Edelbrock camshaft kit for small block engines for $150. One of my co-workers had just purchased a new Camaro and he traded me a 1947 Indian (74 cubic inch Chief model) for the cam kit. It hadn't ran for several years but was all original and intact and looked fairly good.
In the early seventies being hard up for money, I agreed to sell the Indian for $300 and got a $50 check for deposit, cashed the check and never saw the guy again. Disassembled the bike in the eighties with intention of fully restoring it but that never happened. In the nineties I sold the "basket case" for $1200. Fully restored, it would be worth BIG bucks now. They also made a Super Chief that was 80 cubic inches in that era and had an inline 4 cylinder (in the thirties, I think). In the late forties or early fifties, Indian sold out to British Royal Enfield.

Great story on that Indian. I remember 10 or so years ago Manistique Kewadin Casino was having a drawing for two beautiful Indian Cycles, one was the Scout.
