You didn't lost a lot because of crowded conditions, slow game speed, small spread, etc. You lost a lot because of variance.

The difference in a "normal fast game" and the game you played, will be a difference in EV, say, $40/hour is normal and you were playing with $25/hour at this store (example). But playing in crowded conditions is not why you lost.

At the end of the day, in the long run, there is no mathematical difference to you losing a particular hand whether crowded conditions or heads up, a crowded table can easily have saved you as much as it could have hurt you. What is different is you just taking longer to get to your N0 with such few hands and that is why you remember your losses a lot more effectively.

My advice, if you're on a low BR, I would actually play crowded conditions so your wins and losses are not extreme, and see if you can catch a lucky streak to build your roll slowly. Heads up you can get wiped out quickly, dont fall in love with the win rates you see on CVCX when you up the amount of hands per hour, look at every statistic and see if it benefits your roll and your playstyle.

I'm the opposite on the approach of playing crowded tables. I enjoy taking on the dealer heads up or with as few players on the table as possible.

Same here. There's not any real voodoo to playing a dealer heads up, and I'm okay with that when I get the opportunity. I'll see a lot more hands per hour and possibly take better advantage of higher counts when I'm all by myself.

When playing heads up my memory is that I win more. When the count is good, me or the dealer gets the high cards, not the other players and I get more hands during the high count. Even if I am wrong here, I won’t play in crowded conditions.
There may be a difference in multi deck games, but DD high counts could disappear so fast that getting several consecutive good bets out is rare. Maybe the mathematical chance of you getting a good hand is the same, but getting more chances during the high count drops fast.
If I am wrong, please correct me. I am full of confidence one on one.

Sure, heads up gets you a lot more hands but your exposure is much greater, too.

Wrong. Yes the reason for losing wasn't because of a crowded table, but his chances of getting out of that downswing were worse because of the lack of hands during that shoe. Nice steady slow loss and those will happen far more often at a crowded table and because of that will stick in your head.

No, he was right. You effectively just re-worded what he said.
