It is a good idea to enter the blackjack table with your mind somewhere else?

Would it be good to play if your mind is not in the game for the day? The reason why I am asking this is because it occurs to me that a skillful blackjack play would be about to play with distractions. It occurs to me that it is dangerous for a Professional Blackjack to play on and off. I don't know too many people who is distracted and still be able to keep the count.

Any suggestion from the professional would be appreciated.

You need to be able to play with significant distraction. So practice, practice, practice until you can. Eventually counting will become second-nature, almost automatic.

That said, I know I personally benefit from a little warm-up when I haven't played for a long time. Reviewing index numbers is especially helpful to me. Also, it is urgent that you have your "head in the game" in the sense of being financially and psychologically prepared for variance.

IF the game is really really good, particularly a pitch game that does not require much mental effort, then even a distracted counter should be able to beat it senseless. If it's a tough game or a shoe game where some mental effort is required to keep the count for 10 to 15 minutes at a time and where a few errors can make an actual +1 True Count turn into a +4 True or -3 True then distractions can create play errors and a lot of extra flux.

After playing or practicing enough you will almost never get distracted, counting becomes automatic. In fact, you should, in a sense, intentionally distract yourself, so that you look distracted or like somebody hardly paying attention to the game.
Timidity is dangerous: Better to enter with boldness. Any mistakes you commit through audacity are easily corrected with more audacity.

"Your mind is somewhere else", like obsessed with a personal problem, just had a fight with your hot girl friend, had words with your boss today,,,that type of stuff,,,and not distractions from casino noise etc. That being the case, I for sure would not play until you were back into the confident, deadly, blood sucking, BJ Warrior mentality, Zoned only on the game and nothing else, as if in another world.

    Refuse to play unless Zoned!

    Ouchez,

I got what you are saying.

"Your mind is somewhere else", like obsessed with a personal problem, just had a fight with your hot girl friend, had words with your boss today,,,that type of stuff,,,and not distractions from casino noise etc.

Wouldn't that bring your professional play to another level if I can have those personal problems and focus on my advantage play at the same time instead of keeping away? Since being advantage player is a more of a mind set than techniques.

    Serious,
To me it is a combination of both, and both must be in complete harmony.

During competition you have to learn to focus and leave everything else outside the game. I personally feel it is the same and wonder if others do. When I enter the casino I am focused to win. I am not in a hurry, but I am sticking to my plan and pumped up to beat their game. It doesn’t matter what went on that day or week, the game is on! Should I be physically ill, it would be different, but I can block out everything else and bring my best to the game. I’m sure others do the same.

First, in response to my friend Ouchez, with the sharp new avatar, comments. I am assuming (and we all know where that can get ya) that playing Zoned is a lot different than playing stoned. Also wondering why you would have a fight with your hot girlfriend? Admittedly, I am not an expert in this area, but I would think this is a lose-lose proposition. You lose the argument or you win the argument, and receive the cold.....ahh, shoulder. Either way you lose.

In all seriousness, as human's we all have things going on in our lives at different times. Some good, some bad. Illness, waiting for test results from your doctor. Your daughter's upcoming wedding. Maybe you have some financial issues related to, or unrelated to blackjack. Your grandson broke his arm playing softball (girl's game...lol). Upcoming closing on a real estate deal. Whatever. At whatever level you play, if you are going to commit to playing blackjack that day, you need to put these things on hold and focus on the task at hand. You have a worthy opponent in the casino and you better show him the respect of being focused. If you go in half-assed on auto pilot, you will get your butt kicked. If go go in completely focused, you may get your butt kicked, but at least you have a fighting chance. Going in preoccupied, with your mind focused on other things is like going into battle without all your weapons.

    Competent play

It's well known that alcohol affects judgement but not as well known that it affects it in very different degrees for certain people. I'm one of a lucky few that has very little AP performance drop when drunk. Sadly, I can't benefit much from it because most of my play is in a state that has strict alcohol/gambling laws.
Focus is extremely important when playing at $500 per hand with split and double down possibilities ever present, so yes be on top of your game so the inevitable downturns can be blamed on bad variance and nothing else.
