    Counting speed

I recently just check my speed after a while of confident play. Now i am feeling not adequately at 26-28 secs per deck in a 6deck countdown in cvbj. What is the norm? No pun intended. I am only using a level 1 count.

That is an reasonable speed for casino play. Most dealers or other players will make the game easily counted at the speed. The advantage of high speed is in a headsup game with a fast dealer or when you get a rare opportunity to play headsup when it is usually not so. Tearing off the hands at max speed can get a big count played to the end before you have company. If you push the limits of what is tolerated it can get the money and be gone before they can act against you.

The most complicated count I use in a casino keeps a level 2 count and a level 3 count simultaneously with about 1/4 of the cards counted in both counts in different directions and magnitudes. I am faster than you are and can keep up with the fastest dealer. I played with a slow ploppy that decided my play was too unusual to take and the ploppy sat and watched me tear through 4 or 5 shoes in no time with a speed demon dealer. The ploppy commented on how I played my hands differently than he would but I have no hesitation when making a decision. This should give you the idea of how speed comes in handy and why you should try to get faster. If you always end up playing with slow ploppies your speed is just fine. I got over twice as many hands /hour once the ploppy was gone. My EV/round goes up because I am alone and then I get more than double the rounds in the same time. I probably about triple my hourly by getting headsup with a fast dealer.

I always want to give up when you say that...

I don't know what the norm is, but my guess is about 18-22 seconds for a single deck countdown, since that's what the other players I play with tend to get when they do single deck countdowns.

What you really want to get fast at is being able to cancel hands against other hands (if you're back-counting, especially), so you can quickly scan a table and see that the A8 cancels with the 29, and the 46 cancels the TT. Or the T8 and A9 cancels with the 35.

The cancelling has helped a ton for me with the back counting. That roulette table or the T.V. are more 'interesting' than the BJ game happening

Like Tthree said I think it is reasonable for shoe games. I personally am around 22-25, not much faster, and I have no problem in the shoes games. I have never played heads up or on a SD (only one close to me is about 4 hrs away), so can't speak for those.
