    buying in

If I go to the casino with a bank roll of $1000, and play $5 minimum tables with $50 my max bet, is there any reason I should buy in the full $1000, or can I buy $500 and save the other $500 for emergency?

I would cash in for $300-$500 and keep the other half of your bankroll in reserve in case you need it. I think that would help add a little cover to your play and make you look more like a gambler, besides you can always reach into your wallet... not that you want to however. If those are levels you fell comfortable with you don't have to expose your entire bankroll during any particular buy-in to a BJ game.

Buy in for $100 and if you need more, buy in again. Even better, rat hole a couple and buy in for $ 100 more. Don't buy in for a large amount and bet small. You playing 2 deck or 6 deck? If 6 deck, your spread could be better.

Well, I would shoot for $ 5 to 2 x 40 minimum. Of course if $ 1000 is your max bankroll and you have no way to supplement it, your ROR is going to be high. You really didn't give a lot of info but if red chipping, on 6 deck game, you need a larger spread. Also, the reason I said buy in for $ 100 is to appear you are losing when you keep buying in. If you buy in for a large amount you'd be expected to bet larger amounts. If you keep buying in, it appears you are losing.

BUY IN - I would do what Bodarc said and buy in for $80 - $100 at a time, rathole and buy in again and again. This looks like you're losing and constantly buying in.

SPREAD - You are spreading 10:1 at $5 - $50. If you use 2 spots, you might be able to get out more such as 2 x $30 (12:1) or 2 x $50 (20:1) to increase your spread and EV. FWIW, my experience is that piles of red chips are tolerated better than 1 or 2 greens at small places. Watch what happens when someone bets green. If the dealer yells "Green Action" just put 5-6 reds out instead.

Buy-in for small amounts often. You look like you are not a threat and are chasing your losses when you start betting big. If your max bet is 2x40 a buy-in of $100 is plenty.

So can I buy more chips in the middle of a hand if I want to split or dd?

Of course you can. I have bought in several times in one round.

My personally record is 5 buyins for 1 hand. Split 3 times with 2 double downs at maxbet. After losing all of it I realized exactly why we keep at least 10 max bets before the start of a shoe.

This is almost exactly what I do. I however will buy in for $150 and ask for two greens. I keep my greens under a stack of reds and surround that stack with other stacks of reds so that the green chips are hidden from view from all angles. After the dealer has left and another replaces him/her, I "palm" one of the greens then pocket it by getting up from the table and going to the bathroom or for a drink (the new dealer will not know that I cashed in with 2 greens and therefore will not notice it missing). If someone asks why I put the greens under one stack (so for has only been a player, never a dealer or pitboss), I tell them that they are my "last line of defense" or my "all in" money if I start losing (the stack of red with the greens is in the middle of the other stacks and closest to me). After an hour or so passes, I will pocket the other green with a different dealer again. From then on out, if I lose, I just buy in with more cash.
I am always really careful doing this. I pick just the right moment. They could see me do it, but then again they could see me winning a lot of money week after week. Since I play rated, this is a must.
