    basic strategy

I am trying to make flashcards for basic strategy so I can make it second nature and I have realized for the first time that there are lots of variations in different websites on what constitutes basic strategy. For instance some show always standing on A,8, and some show doubling down when the dealing is showing 6.

Is there some official basic strategy that I could use?

Basic strategy is different depending mainly on number of decks used and whether or not the dealer hits a soft 17. There are other differences based on whether you may double after split or not, etc. Be sure to look up the strategy for the game you will be playing.

yeah that makes sense. The basic strategy I am looking at on the bj21 website is based on 6D, DAS, S17, no surrender, peek. And with me playing mainly $5 minimum tables, I am mostly on 6D tables. So thats the one Im gonna use. Unless someone posts something different...

Find out what the rules are for the game you'll be playing. I'm 99% sure that a $5 table will NOT be S17...

If you have a tablet or smart phone buy the flash drills app sold here You will learn much faster then with flash cards because you can drill yourself much more. After two days i was at 90% with the felt strategy. After a week i was at 100%. Again let me repeat, buy the app.

I guess I'm kind of old school when it comes to learning/teaching BS. I found it easier to visualize the charts, and engrain the plays through repetition, dealing myself four hands per round with 2D or 6D at the kitchen table, with the charts to the side for quick reference. Using real cards and a discard tray helps with deck estimation. Using an app has some advantages, but I like to have a couple decks always within reach.I find the flash cards excellent for learning the indexes and keeping them fresh. I zip through them while at stop lights, in the john, at my desk between meetings, etc. but I have to say practicing on CVBJ overall can't be beat.

Another great resource is professional blackjack by Stanford Wong. I believe it covers BS for every single rule set possible. Also cvbj software has flashcard drills to learn BS too as well.

blackjackinfo.com has a basic-strategy generator. You simply enter the games' rules (# decks, h/s17, surrender, peek, [n]DAS, DA9,10,11 or DA2), and it spits out the basic strategy for that game. http://www.blackjackinfo.com/bjbse.php

To practice basic strategy, best way to do it would be to buy CVBJ, that way you KNOW if you're making mistakes or are playing properly. Plus, it's invaluable to practicing BJ once you start counting....that is, if you are going to learn how to count. Not to mention, you'll get real-life practice in when you get those stupid hands, like A2v9, then draw 3, 2, 5, A, then 2, and you're stuck trying to figure out what you have. In the heat of battle, it can be quite confusing trying to add up all your cards (whether you're counting or not).

Basic strategy is pretty instinctual. The only tricky part for me was learning the soft doubles. What finally made it stick was memorizing the geometric shape of the double block for soft doubles in the basic strategy chart. Memorizing the few exceptions to common sense was easy but the soft doubles took the geometric shapes to finally be set in my memory.
