Bitcoin [...] has more than a checkered reputation. Gun-running, drugs, assassins for sale – I think I’ll stick with dollars until their act is cleaned up.

I've heard some people also use dollars for those types of transactions. I don't have any interest in Bitcoins, but I don't think it's fair to equate the currency to what some people do with it. I agree with your point on the added variance though. Even if I had a business that I wanted to accept Bitcoins, I would still immediately convert it to dollars to mitigate that currency risk.

Not equating it. But, it is in the nature of Bitcoins that they are more likely to be used in this manner, which could result in problems down the road.
