    Suggestions for suggestive dealers

    Hi, all

This has happened a few times with a couple of "helpful" dealers and I never know how to handle it. Shoe game with great rules, pen, etc. Small place I frequent with low limits and friendly people. Slow day.

$10 table and TC hovers at -1 to +1 for a long time so bet is 1 unit. I go on a streak of wins and dealer says, "You should really press your bet now." I've been playing 1 unit for 30+ minutes waiting for something to happen. Of course, after he says that, the count goes down to -1 and stays there. I'm looking for options but no other tables open. Can't play 2 spots without betting twice the table min. 0 to 1 other guy at table, so cards last a long time.

I grunt something that could either be "yes", "no", or gas pains and stay at 1 unit. There's really no reason to leave since I'm winning and no place to go if I do leave the table. If I win a couple more hands, dealer says, "See, you should bet more when you're winning. You'll never make any money the way you're playing." If I lose a couple, the dealer is quiet but still watching like a hawk to prove his theory later. It's easy if the count goes up soon because you can 'take his advice' but if it hovers at 0 to +2 for a long time, it becomes awkward.

I never know how to handle this. Suggestions for some reasonable reply that will break the tension? Thanks in advance!

I usually make up something about how the cards still don't feel lucky enough. I've found you can get away with pretty much anything if you mention luck. Or you can also say something like every time you raise your bet after beating a dealer with an 18 you lose but if you wait a while first then you win.

Tell the dealer that you're making more than he is...and that it's probably going to stay that way unless he shuts his mouth!

There are dealers at the table?

That's always when I start losing.
I'm finally winning so I don't want to change anything. Just let it Flow.
You can cap my bet if you want. Oh, when its your money at risk...
The count is way too low for that. (Oops, how'd that get in there. LOL)
These cards seem to have eyes and know when I up my bet.
I am not feeling it right now.
I have a lot to make back before I am playing with the casino's money.
Doesn't that string of wins make me due for a lose? I should probably lower my bet if anything.

I just say nothing and bet exactly according to the count as always.

This happens to me a lot too. I am winning like crazy and watching others increase their bet and having a great time making a killing, and there I am like a chump (in their eyes) betting the minimum. I have had dealers make a variation of comments on this as well. Some say I should up my bet while others merely comment on how I have a tendency to keep my bet small. I personally don't like it when dealers notice ANY betting style of mine as they may wonder why I sit at one unit forever and then from out of nowhere, raise my bet.
I personally say things similar to what Tthree said. As long as you say something that has the appearance of depending on good/bad luck, you don't sound like a counter.

However, if they or others persist after this, here is my favorite technique, especially if the pit boss is watching:

Raise your bet one unit. The way I see it, I am "investing" one unit to say that I believe in luck and camouflage myself a little. If you win, keep betting two units until you lose. If you lose, you have a big "I-told-you-so" coming to the dealer and others that the streak was going to end. Either way, you certainly look more like you believe in luck and not a counter, and it only costs you one unit to do it.

One player suggests not getting conversations with dealers Be polite but don't say much as it makes you memorable and makes the casino harder to recycle later on. You want to be as much of a ghost as possible without appearing to be an automaton. You want the dealer to be indifferent to your results.

I analyze the dealer and the pb on each table I play. A dealer rooting for you can save you from heat. Example: Yesterday I played 2.5 hrs in a 6D game. I spread from 1X5 to 2X100 ( 40 spread ) on 2 different shoes. The counts were running very positive yesterday. During all of this time, the dealer was rooting for me and never called out checks play or anything to the PB. The PB came over when I had my max bets out and I asked if she'd give me a meal ticket. She said not without getting rated and I laughed and said ...you mean I can't even get a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and I've been playing for 2 hours. She cracked up and said I'll give you all the buffets you want but I'm not allowed to if you don't give me some ID. Now if I get a surly dealer etc, I never speak a word but I think that a dealer on your side is a great benefit.

Raise your bet a unit, it's not going to kill you. Plus, he'll like you more if you take his advice. And if you win, there's no better time to throw him a toke (if you do toke ) than then. If you lose, don't say "I told you so, let me do wtf I want k?". Rather, tell him, "eh whatever, you're right I should have been pressing (or "pushing" to sound like a total idiot) my bets while winning".

The only problem I have with raising the bet after their advice is it tends to engender a sense of entitlement. They gave you advice on what to do so they deserve a reward for that and if you are red chipping then cover plays like upping your bet in bad counts and tipping to avoid an early exit can seriously eat into your bottom line.

Well, I wouldn't be so smug to tell him "I told you so." I meant more the ACTION of putting my bet back down according to the count after losing. The action itself would say "I should have been pressing before. It's not good now." I think this would help show you are not a counter. And I agree on this being a good time to tip, especially if the pit boss is watching.
