    Video Poker

I think I could possibly get backed off from a casino for winning constantly there. There has been no heat on me and they still welcome my play but I believe I need to play some video poker or something even though I'd rather jump off the balcony head first than play any kind of slot machine.

What in your opinion is the best book on video poker for a beginner?

    Thanks

I have same question. VP shouldn't be better even though it provides (return) 100.7% than BJ, I think.
BJ has 0.5% HE and if VP has 0.7% Player's Edge, I should learn VP from Tonight.
I have no clew, really curious.

If you think that playing VP will deflect the heat I assure you that you are sadly mistaken.

Learning to play VP properly so that you can Stay & Play at a casino/hotel to be comped while

remaining unconcerned about being evicted from said property ~ for that you want to learn V.P.

Video poker is not going to buy you much time in your situation and is not worth playing at all for that purpose. I actually don't know what a good beginner book is but "million dollar video poker" is great reading at least and has good stories about how you should think to win at VP.

I can tell you that if you commit to VP full time, take the right approach and have a large bankroll, it is far more lucrative with less heat than blackjack. I know tons of $100 to 200+/hr vp opportunities that I can play for hours with little heat, and a 200k bankroll is more than enough for most of them. However many of these have crazy variance, in most cases you are playing a high variance VP machine, and your EV in excess of 100% is coming from some drawing that you have at best at 10-20% chance of getting anything. There are slightly higher edge plays if you are willing to play for low stakes making say 30 an hour and grind it out, which I'm not personally.

Back in the day you could play on machines with an off the top edge, and get promotions on top of that, and drawings, giving you a huge edge. Now you will mostly be playing games in the 99-99.8% range and hoping mailers drawings and other giveaways push you to at best 101%.

OK, thanks guys. I'll have to think of some way to invent a few losses. I have two or three fairly close casinos and this is a hobby for me. I just don't want to get backed off from this one. Maybe I'm just paranoid.

Exactly. Video poker is good for qualifying for comps and promos.
May the cards fall in your favor.

Why would you rather jump off a balcony head first than play a machine?

I think million dollar VP is dated...but it's still alright. Also check out Comp City

I'll play a slot machine IF the machine has a progressive jackpot that is sufficiently large.

I know a bank of 25¢ Full Pay JOB VP machines that are progressive. Last time I played,

the additional jackpot money had raised the return to what I estimated to be a 102% return,

IF you think that you hold a 2% edge over the house, by counting cards, you are deluding

yourself. You probably have an e.v. of 100.5% to 101%, albeit with lower variance than VP.

    Rolling and Zen:
I have nothing against VP other than to me playing a slot machine of any kind is probably the most boring thing I can think of. I might could play a progressive for a bit but I don't care how much money is involved, if I had to pound a slot machine all day, I'd quit and go fishing. I already have Comp City.

I thought it might help a little with longevity but since you all pointed out it wouldn't help, I'll forget it. Different strokes for different folks.

That's unfortunate. I think slot machines are really really fun [if you have an advantage, that is].

Slots are pretty awful for me, I really just want to be elsewhere at all costs. VP I have to make decisions which keeps me in the zone. Of course 99% of them are completely automatic at this point but that's no different than bj. The most annoying things about the game are smokers and getting the bill acceptors to work. After 3-4 hours of VP I do have to take breaks or I start to miss hands, however a short break is all I need usually.

I have a friend who is the opposite, he is always looking for ways to play slots with an advantage and just loves them but can't stand more than 2 hours at a VP machine.

Still the absolute worst of the worst is keno.

I just stumbled upon Wongs Professional Video Poker at a Half Price Books. It focuses on 8-5 and 6-5 progressives. Can't wait to go to Louisiana to scout those machines.
