    Don't ask, just do it!

Had an interesting thing happen the other day. I go to my local spot and they have a playable 6 deck game (other than the fact you have to pay 50 cents a hand to play).

Well, this night I see a table with a sign that says "dd bj!" No one is playing but the rules are posted. Horrible game. 6:5, no das, double 9 10 11 only etc. complete crap.

Pit boss is standing there and I ask if the game offers surrender. He says "no, none of our games offer surrender".

Well a week earlier I had sat down at the 6d game one table over and surrendered a 16 v 10. What's everyone's thoughts on this? Ill never ask again, they'll have to tell me no when I try and surrender. Anyone know of other opportunities like this that should be obvious but aren't? Failure of casino to protect its game or (could it be considered) something more? Treat it like a mispay or treat it like a move that could land you in the slammer?

I'm not sure if you are being serious about 6 deck ante game being playable......

Do not ever play any game with a .50 ante, you cannot overcome those odds.
"One of these days in your travels, you are going to come across a guy with a nice brand new deck of cards, and this guy is going to offer to bet you that he can make the Jack of Spades jump out of the deck and squirt cider in your ear. But, son, do not take this bet, for if you do, as sure as you are standing there, you are going to end up with an ear full of cider."

Not playable just walk away. I will never play a blackjack game where you have to pay money to play hands. Unless you could find any casino promotions that will out weight the house edge of the game. Then you might be able to make a couple of dollars in that game. If you planning to attack the game with straight counting than it might not be a profitable game to play.

    Ok, clarification about the ante.

the reason I consider the game "playable" is I can literally wear a shirt that says "I count cards!" In this joint and they do not care. They know I can't do much damage because of the ante.

When a new game begins I walk up and back count right when the shuffle is done, and I stand they as long as I want with no heat whatsoever. If the count is good enough to justify a few hands now and then I will occasionally plop down an spread to 2 or 3 hands with bet spreads most people only see in sims.

I don't go there to play. I go there because its the local thing to do for people my age on the weekends. I get free nonalcoholic beverages and I get real world practice. Most trips I don't get a chance to play, but when I do it's usually a super sweet opportunity.

I made the thread because of the surrender incident but so I can clarify on the ante part: 0 heat, back count and Wong in at TC +5, instantly play 3 hands $75+ each, das, split 4 times, split any hand, resplit aces, 1 card to split ace, 75% pen, s17.

Is it a good game? No. But as far as real world practice goes its great and the few chances I do have to play I think are worth it. What do you guy think given the above scenario?

You're right that it's not a good game, and it's not going to add up to much profit at all relative to the level of risk taken, but if you are waiting for +5 and playing at least $75 per spot, you probably do have a small positive CE (assuming $75 is an appropriate bet for your bankroll to begin with). As long as you are treating it as practice time and not expecting to make any significant amount of money off of it (probably not even enough to cover your gas to get there), and as long as you don't place any other bets or use any cover, I don't see a problem with it. However, since the variance is high relative to the profit you expect to make, you probably don't want to do this very much unless your bankroll is $15k or more. If you have closer to $5k, then you really can't afford the variance associated with this strategy, even though the EV is positive.

Nyne, you are correct. The place is 5 minutes from me so its kind of the local hang out. It's not a place you want to seriously play but the real world experience is nice. Usually I can snag some free cash off slot machines and with vouchers and free play from my friends I can cover the expenses so we get some free food etc.

back to my initial question, the pit said they do not offer surrender but I have surrendered before at this joint.

is it better to ask permission or simply seek forgiveness? Are there other plays like this I may be missing??? Anyone of thoughts on that situation or a similar situation?

Just say Surrender and let the dealer respond.
If they do offer surrender, suppose you have a 16 v A. Say Surrender before the dealer checks for bj. Sometimes they'll give you your half back before they check for BJ. That's a very +EV play and should get you to study your ES plays.

21forme, thank you so much! That was exactly the kind of advice I was looking for! I practice my ES and LS indexes regularly in case I find a game that offers it, now ill practice them knowing I may get to use them more than expected!

Stopgambling, I agree. I know I'm new here but I not a noobie. Yes the game is close, but when I say I play I literally mean maybe 20 hands for ever 10 hours I spend there. I know this game is designed to fail so I only play under very special circumstances.

Most of the time I will do scavenger plays off my friends that are there strictly as gamblers. In some instances I will back bet with a friend playing and simply adding my bet to theirs. Ill pick up a few checks when I save their butt from a bad mistake. It's not a money maker. It's not serious play. It's nothing like what I would do in Vegas or AC.

I'm not jg. I'm not famous and I'm new here, but I want everyone to realize that I do take my game seriously (which is why I'm here, to learn from the best) and even though my local games suck, I know what I'm doing. (Even if there is a mountain of stuff I have yet to learn). I hope through threads like this I can gain enough of your respect for you and the other vets to share some of your wisdom with me.
