I say mice instead of minus. when I get to around - or + 6, I just say the number without the - or + until I start getting closer to the zero. it's easy to tell whether its + or - in the extremes by the feeling of excitement as compared to wanting to leave.

Ok I have a tip to add.
Look at the felt where it says INSURANCE * PAYS * 2 TO 1
Use the point between INSURANCE and PAYS as 0, concentrate on the letters of INSURANCE in negative counts and concentrate on the other side for positive counts.
If the table has a different layout just pick something on the table as your 0 point and then concentrate on one side for negative and the other for positive. Switch back and forth as the count changes.
To OP: I've found that counting out loud can be very helpful in keeping the count and that using a pen and notebook can be very helpful for keeping track of units won, hands per hour etc.
However those actions will probably get you barred (no they will get you barred) so my real question is why are you still counting once the game has tanked? Do you not Wong? Are you playing more for recreation than for income and counting just adds to the thrill and maybe helps you out a tiny bit here and there?
I ask these questions in all seriousness because I am wondering what level you are able to play at using these techniques.
I have experimented with different techniques for keeping an ace side count but they were much simpler than this technique and you're using this on the RC and TC unless I mistaken.
I seriously would have to disagree with this suggestion!!! If someone is going to invest that kind of money into this endeavor then "yes" they will need to pick up a book that taylors to the strategy they wish to employ. However, on the other end of the spectrum, this is a far cry from being all they will ever need to read. No one book has all the answers and with that being said I believie one should be willing to devour "EVERY" written word on the subject they possibly can to effectively prepare them for the grind. Just like Snyder stated in Blackbelt in Blackjack, counting cards is a science, getting away with it is an art. I possess an extremely large library of Blackjack books and even read the bad ones in which I read for humor and place them in my "Fiction" section. LOL One could learn things from the bad books... and that is "What Not To DO" and how to avoid falling prey to their misconceptions and bogas strategies. In my book Dynamic Blackjack-The Professional Approach I have over 100 footnotes for my readers directing them to other notable books and specific related topics in which I encourage for them to also read to further expand their knowledge because one book just cannot possess all of the answers. I think that if someone were to just read one book then they have the potential of falling into the trap of overestimating their true advantage and skill level, and of course this would still be dependent on that "one" book they chose to read. Finally, one should be willing to invest in CVData, CVCX, and CVBJ to assure they are keeping it all REAL!!!!
