Saw a guy using a device

I was at my local store yesterday. It didn't take long for me to notice this guy (next to me) was using a device to keep the count. As each card hit the felt, he would push buttons using his left hand which was inside his jacket pocket.

At the shuffle, he pulled out his phone, then pulled out this device with other hand (kept under table). It was a small key fob with 2 buttons (they appeared to be unmarked). I was able to take a quick glance. He saw me look, then left the table shorty after.

Man, this dude is an idiot. It's only a matter of time before he scores a pair of handcuffs.

I've seen such devices advertised before, the irony is that such a device simply maintains the RC, which is the easiest part of counting cards.
"One of these days in your travels, you are going to come across a guy with a nice brand new deck of cards, and this guy is going to offer to bet you that he can make the Jack of Spades jump out of the deck and squirt cider in your ear. But, son, do not take this bet, for if you do, as sure as you are standing there, you are going to end up with an ear full of cider."

I assume: If the device can maintain the RC, wouldn't it be able to maintain the cards played? Meaning it can also figure out the exact TC down to the card to determine if the remaining cards are +EV? Of course, it'd be difficult to know the actual TC or how to ramp your bets, unless it had a pre/customizable configuration to do a buzz length based on how many units or where you are in the ramp (ie: short buzz is 1 unit, long buzz is max units)? You can throw PE out the window, though!

Then again, the edge you get in counting, even perfectly, is so minimal....and to get caught (cheating) with a device by gaining an edge doing something legal (counting).....is kinda foolish to say the least.

The key fob type devices I've seen before simply use the 2 buttons, one for high card, one for low card, even if it was somehow pre-programmed with # of decks, penetration, etc, it would still be unable to calculate a TC without inputting the neutral cards. I'm sure there are more complicated devices available out there, but even computer perfect play is not an edge worth a felony conviction for.

Forgot about the neutral cards, Aussie.

And yeah, second half of the last sentence sums it up.

Just be the computer. Your brain is capable of anything the computer can do if you train it for the task. So many people train their brain to be a pencil and pad making a mark on one side or the other of the line rather than a supercomputer.

It's probably the remote car key /control type. There was an article on it a while back about an ex? police veteran , i really dont remember the details . he was supposedly charged.

Look at it from the casino point of view. They have the law firmly on their side. Get caught with a device and you are history mate. A device is for cheating casinos out of their ill-gotten gains. And anyone who uses a device to gain an advantage is a goddam criminal cheat, who deserves at least one short blast on the electric chair.

Right, so that priciple is firmly established and everyone knows exactly where they stand, right? Nope. The human mind is a device. Smartasses are using this device to cheat casino money every day of the week and twice on weekends! There oughta be a law against it. Oh wait, there is.

Obviously the player wasn't that great if he needs a computer to do the work for him, he should be able to use his brain and do it manually. That is what is going to separate the wheat from the chaff.
