In a deeply dealt single deck game it makes a difference. In a dd game it makes a difference on insurance bet if you can get/read the extra info off other players. In a surrender game late in the shoe with max bets out it makes a difference as well.Is it worth it ,it's really up to you .It does bring more heat though. These are my main reason when i want to sit on 3 rd base, also easier to scan the table ,no doubt( so is 1 st base).1 st base also have advantages.

One thing about third base that can be really annoying, especially at a full table, is having to look THROUGH an opaque discard tray. First base can provide other opportunities as well; just one example, if you know an ace or ten is about to be dealt you will want to be at first base to catch it.

I just do not bother talking those thing .More possibilties ,why bother listing them out for the spies , I meant the ones that do not know the basics. From the video " YOu are waiting for the count to rise ,then you bet big .You are not allowed to do it here. No casino would allow you to do that! If you wanna bet, you stay at the same bet all through the shoe. "

Thanks everyone for your comments. A lot of useful info and DSchles, thanks for the info about deeper penetration. I would never have thought about that.

Here is the difference. Your index is based on the play of your and and the dealers hand at the same composition except for the card(s) you draw. That is what the index play is based on. Look at your example.

The cards are dealt. I get a 10, the next person gets a 10 and the next gets a 10. Now the count is +1 and it is the pro's time to be hit. He bet $50 based upon a count of 4 but now the count is +1.
First base plays his hit stand strategy at TC +4 the dealer actually hits at TC +1. The guy at third base gets the exact play for the index calculation. He decides at TC +1 and the dealer plays with the card(s) third base received as the only other card removed. If the index said stand on TC +4 because the dealer is likely to bust (an over simplification) but then the dealer is hitting at TC +1 because you are at first base standing may have been the wrong move. The decision was based on two things: your expected outcome versus the dealers expected outcome. At first base the dealers expected outcome has a range which could be wide (minus 3 or more or plus 6 or more in the example) but at third base it is fixed. The bets at first and third are made with exactly the same information so there is no betting advantage to either position.

So what makes third base better than fourth?

Wow. I've been thinking for years that 3rd base was the 3rd seat. And I've always avoided the 3rd seat because of numerous "surveillance on 3rd base" comments here. So sometimes I'd sit at first seat or the fifth seat, but boy have I avoided that dreaded 3rd seat, thinking it was 3rd base. Now I got it. Live and learn. How the heck did it get the name 3rd base if it's the 5th seat? You know, 1st base was the 1st seat, so I just figured.
