    More poker tourneys

Played 5 of these today. On 1st table we're down to 14 players. The tourney pays down to 10. I'm dealt AKs OOP and make a 6x raise. Chip leader shoves on me. I could have folded and probably made it into the final 10 but after looking at his stats (67,35, 3B 24) I called feeling I was way ahead of his range. BTW I had 200+ hands on him. Well I was good 'til the river when his 8,6 hit a 6. I played a LAG style today 18/13 with a 9 3B stat.
2nd table: Came in 6th place. I played this one a little more aggressive.
20/15/11. When you get down to the last 50 or so of these donk fests the guys play a good game. I'm happy to go as deep as I have with these.
    Avg. entries 600.

    Yesterday I had 1st place.

If anyone objects to me posting this stuff, holler and I'll stop since this is obviously not blackjack.

    George,

I have done 3 live tourneys, won first once. I enjoy Poker for the slow pace, but I view it as a dangerous game. BJ is where I get my thrills, if I can really play as I want, but these days that is almost impossible,,,well,,it IS impossible, and sad, as I am a better player now than I ever was, just not nearly the stamina.

    Best,
    Ouchez

Probably no one cares if you post about poker; they just wonder why you don't put it in the perfectly good Other Games forum.

Yeah Ouchez, LOL... I feel yer pain, man: same here.

Was especially apparent to me last week, on my most recent Vegas trip in over a year. Could only manage to keep myself up and at 'em working the tables later than 1 am on ONE day out of the 4 day trip. Otherwise it was back to the room and crash every night after only playing a little.

It's just some kind of cruel trick of nature, I guess... after years of honing skills to get really proficient, Mother Nature conspires with Lady Blackjack to take away the energy we need to really benefit from our experience. You young guys reading this, enjoy it while it lasts

Live or On'Line? Limit is almost gone (Live) and if you plan to play for low stakes, the rake will eat you alive.

When it comes to gambling, I'm a poker player first and blackjack player second. I only started playing blackjack because I was interested in finding something else to do in casinos besides only playing tournaments. As it turns out, I've won a lot more money at blackjack counting cards than at poker (I'm mostly a tournament player = high variance). Actually, I would say I've won more at Limit Omaha 8 Or Better, then Blackjack, then NL/Limit Hold'em... but most of the tournaments available are NL Hold'em.

But I agree that Poker discussion doesn't belong in the "General Blackjack Forum."
    Vaya con Dios...

I don't know the size (stakes that you play) but poker is an evolving game. The best way to stay ahead of the curve is to join a good training site. I used Drag the Bar and I had a friend that used Cardrunners. This gave us an opportunity to compare and share what we learned. Another high touted site is Deucescracked. They all give a free trial period so you can try all of them out.

Tru dat. LA limit is alive and well. But if I had to do it over again, I'd specialize in NL. My non-scientific opinion is that even with the cap, NL is going to be where the money is for quite a while. If Jesse8888 questions the profitability of 20-40 in LA, then I must also.

    Limit:
For the past decade, Small Stakes Limit Hold'em, by Ed Miller has been considered an instant classic, and not just for small stakes. I don't know it too well, but it's certainly better than many others, especially the small stakes books I grew up on.

Middle Limit Holdem Poker, by Bob Ciaffone, elevated my game more than anything else. It's 350 no-nonsense example hand quizzes. My love for this book is controversial, in that some people don't like some of the advice. A lot of that is due to him putting his money where his mouth is 350 times, so there's plenty of opportunity to quibble with complex decisions in a complex game. Instead of useless "often you should raise if" or "if the situation looks promising, you should" hedge statements, he says "Raise, because x,y, and z". It teaches you how to think about a poker state, and if you disagree with Ciaffone you will have the tools to disagree with him.

Play. It's not like blackjack, where you can play a competent game before you even enter the casino. You gotta play and then think about your mistakes.

Don't stay in the [live] low limits too long. You have to put in your time down there, of course. But staying too long will really mess up your hand-range deduction skills. It did for me.

No-limit books: I have books I like, but I have dubious expertise with which to believe my recommendations have value. Ed Miller's books are valued, I believe. Professional No-limit Hold'em Volume I has a math-y, algorithmic bent that might appeal to card counters.

No-limit tournaments: I personally love Arnold Snyder's first book, Poker Tournament Formula, and have had good success (and fun) using the spirit of its guidelines, but not to a statistically significant degree yet. Tourneys are so... long.
