I hate to be "that guy"...
'Sometimes theyve been told you're a counter'? If that was the case, you wouldn't be there, or theyd be half shoeing you. No dealer is nervous you're a counter. Its not their money.
a dealer talking during shuffles isnt shuffling, so you're not playing. Further more, they know you more, so if you're backed off, you cant come back for a quick game if everyone knows you.
"Good players" can get the money and get out before they even know what hit them, so they cant evaluate your play.
IMHO
95% of the time, tipping while counting gains you nothing if you are on a limited bank. If you are betting into the black, a dollar will look like nothing to them, and you cant afford it if you aren't. The information in this thread is nonsense, and I'll advise people who thought they learned something to forget it.
Edit: There are definitely times to tip, but you will know when you get there.

I tip for dealers that are helpful. I have had dealers hold my spots for an hour. I have dealers that greatly increase pen when I arrive at the table. Once in a while they don't saying a mandate for certain cut came down from on high. A few shoes later I am getting the better cuts. I have had dealers do things so lucrative I will not state them here. Then there are dealer errors. I have noticed a correlation to tipping. Not every dealer, alas not many dealers fall into this category but you will never find them if you never tip. It also is an AP red flag to be a stiff at the table. bare minimum the don't like you. More likely they run a skills check a lot sooner. Is it worth it? That depends on the skillz you have at this art of our craft. I believe it is worth it. I might tip into the thousands in a year. I can think of individual trips where the return was twice that. When the dealer scoops everyone else's bets but your max bet on a blackjack is it just a coincidence that you are one they know will tip if they are lucrative dealers? Why does your bet get mispayed and not others? Perhaps it is coincidence but then why is it just you and why is it the same dealer that you are tipping and not the dealers that you don't tip because they aren't helpful to your bottom line?
A good time to tip is when the cut card is potentially the first card out for the next hand and you have a good count. Many dealers will break the shoe at that point. If you push out a toke with your bet and say, "can you do one more?" the dealer will often comply. If the dealer says no or just shuffles, pull the toke back.
