    Splitting Aces

I recently had someone tell me that splitting Aces against a dealer 10 is a bad idea since, receiving only one card on the split, there are more cards likely to make you lose than make you win. That didn't seem right to me because I think he was discounting the prevalence of tens in the deck. Any thoughts?

Welcome to the greatest blackjack forum. While it is true that I would rather split aces against a 5 or 6 up card than a ten, unless you are counting cards and playing in a really ten poor deck or have some sort of next card information, then you should always split the aces against the ten. With most card count systems it takes a deficit of 8 or 9 tens per deck to go against basic strategy and hit the aces instead of splitting them. Really since most card counters try to never play in a shoe where the count is that low, they would almost always split here. So if my assumption is correct that you play basic strategy only then yes, you should always split them....thanks

Splitting Aces is (almost) always the correct play against all dealer's cards.

For we card counters there is an understanding that at a significantly low

True Count it is better to hit than to split ACES when facing a dealer's TEN.

For the Basic Strategist, the mantra is
    "Always split Aces and Eights"

NOTE: Card Counters will not split 8's vs. a dealer 10 at a very high True

Learn basic strategy. Ignore advice from other players. Definitely ignore advice from dealers- they learn basic strategy from ploppies.

If you play perfect basic strategy, your play decisions will be criticized often. Get used to it.

    Foreigners shouldn't split Aces?
"One of these days in your travels, you are going to come across a guy with a nice brand new deck of cards, and this guy is going to offer to bet you that he can make the Jack of Spades jump out of the deck and squirt cider in your ear. But, son, do not take this bet, for if you do, as sure as you are standing there, you are going to end up with an ear full of cider."

Learn Basic Strategy and don't listen to people at the table...especially dealers. You may rarely, on occasion, get some good advice, but a vast majority of the people who play this game have no idea what they are doing. Sad but true.

I definitely ignored the dealer advice when he said "Never take surrender...it's just a rule for the casino's advantage..." That was enlightening...

I would agree that it would be the correct play all the time. I got a pair of aces and split them the other day. I believe the dealer top card was a 4. Anyway, split the aces and thought I was going to get paid. Caught runner, runner deuces. The dealer didn't bust. Just how it goes sometimes.
