It might be somewhere in between. Wizard of Odds says it's 0.46 with perfect composition BS and shuffling after every hand ("optimal"), and 0.48 with total dependent BS and a cut card ("realistic).

    I think surrendering 16 v 8, 15 v 9 and 14 v A might also be worth it. I'll look into that.

Can the OP confirm that when surrendering a $5.50 bet, he/she gets back $3?

I play at many casinos that don't have quarters, and all of them round up for blackjack (I have never seen one that rounds down). For surrender, though, I find they round the other way- down to the nearest quarter (returning only $2.50 of $5.50). In fact, every now and then a dealer will remind me that I lose an extra quarter if I have a $2.50 chip bet, and choose to surrender.

I can confirm the op's claims, the house he is speaking of does round up. They used to let me grind away at them to the point where I spent more time at their tables than some part time dealers, until I targeted a sidebet . Then it all ended rather quickly at both places. Ah, memories of a past life.

At both places? You couldn't go to the one without the sidebet?

I've been back to both and had no issues so far in ~5 hours of play while avoiding the sidebet. I know it's still risky, but I'm prepared to make a quick exit at the first sign of heat.

Yes. I actually had more difficulty playing at the non sidebet one after my initial backoff. First time I went back there I saw the floor going through their surveillance book and left. Maybe two times after that I played one shoe where I spread 1-12 in red, went and ate breakfast, came back and got flat bet in the next shoe. But my problem was that I had overplayed and had been known at both, so its easier to blend in at the larger/busier place. Now it sounds like you haven't had problems at the second place so reasonable session lengths could serve you well. My backoffs were always flat bets, I would still play there occasionally but I relocated to the southwest about a little under a year ago. My subsequent backoffs at the larger/busier place were always the result of going back after the sidebet.

If you're trying to be secretive about the location you are talking about, you're failing. I've never been there and I can already tell what casinos you are talking about based on your descriptions and things I've read here. Anyone that works there would have no trouble identifying what places you are talking about. Just a friendly reminder to think about what you say when you post and what should be kept to email.

Thanks nyne. I am not, I have no intention of playing there again, but would delete or edit my posts if requested by the op.
