Sun Runner: A shocking (and sad) mentality

I wanted to post this somewhere.

Below is part of a response to me on another blackjack related board. Indirectly, this discussion involved playing at a casino that charged a rake (a $0.50 ante per hand).

I've made $500-1000 many times and over a $1000 several. There has been several people win over $10000. $5 min $200 max. The .50 commision ain't that bad once you get used to it. If you start with a $100, 200, or whatever you lose you lose like other places. If you leave with an extra $100 that's what you have won. You don't have to say," I'd have $30 an hour more if it wasn't for that .50". Because there is always what ifs. Like, what if you bet $30 more on that winning hand and got your .50 back.

I was shocked to be reading what I was reading .. on a blackjack 'advantage player' site no less. Not sure why I was shocked, I just was. Here it is, right in front of me, the ploppie mentality, in writing.

Apparently this guy plays for entertainment, I guess, and is just glad when he wins a little. And I know where this guy plays, I've been there, and believe me it's not the beautiful people at the Hard Rock. This guy, and his fellow patrons, are not so wealthy; just work a day people that are a little sweaty, a little dirty, a lot smokey, and can't really afford to lose money. I guess we can all afford to be entertained though ...

More so I guess I felt a little sorry for this guy; probably why I chose to put it this in here, away from the general public at least.

Wow .. what do people think?

My wife and I blow-up $100 if we go to a movie and to eat on Saturday night, I don't know, maybe it's the same for this guy. I guess it is. I blow a hundred and he blows a hundred on Saturday night. He might have been more entertained than I, who knows? He at least had an opportunity to get his money back; all I got was a bad movie and a bad piece of fish. I did get to be with my wife though, but maybe he did to.

I guess flat betting nickle chips for a couple of hours is this guys idea of fun. And every now and again he gets lucky. That must be it.

    Sorry, just got to rambling..

I have to say, it sounds like this guy has a legitimate problem..... it sounds like he's toiling in mediocrity. It also sounds like he might not be the sharpest tool in the shed if he can't see where the flaw in his logic is.

I definitely wouldn't want to be that guy..... a mediocre life and not too bright (I guess they kind of go hand in hand)? If that's the case, I don't know how it could get any worse. I'd rather be a bum on the street; at least then you don't have the option of fooling yourself into thinking that you have a worthwhile life.

Well I guess I got a little carried away..

About Blackjack: The Forum

BJTF is an advantage player site based on the principles of comity. That is, civil and considerate behavior for the mutual benefit of all involved. The goal of advantage play is the legal extraction of funds from gaming establishments by gaining a mathematic advantage and developing the skills required to use that advantage. To maximize our success, it is important to understand that we are all on the same side. Personal conflicts simply get in the way of our goals.
