Yes, indeed, you can get free rooms and food, normally referred to as "comps." When you first arrive at a Las Vegas casino, you should get a players club card. This can be gotten from the players club booth, or in most casinos, right at the blackjack table.
Then, every time you sit down to play, you hand the pitboss your card. He will record how long you play, along with your average bet. In the large modern casinos, this is all done by computer.
An average bet of $200 (US) or so per day for four hours per day will get you a free room (as well as free meals) at most of the major strip properties. The high-end properties (Bellagio, Venetian, Wynn, etc.) will require a little more.
If your bankroll will not handle that, you can get a smaller less luxurious room at one of the downtown casinos (other than the Golden Nugget) for $50 - $100 average bet for four hours per day.
Normally, you pay for the room your first visit, and then you will receive comp offers for subsequent stays in the mail.
The infrequent visitor can still get a comped room on his/her first visit by calling ahead and talking to a casino host. The host will typically offer a room at a reduced rate, and will review your action at the end of your visit and possibly comp everything.
Of course, all of this assumes that you can play your game for four hours per day without getting thrown out of the casino!
