Parker: Stardust S17 DD mostly gone

Okay, the joint was a sweatshop and penetration was iffy at best, but you could always find S17 DAS double deck games, often with minimums as low as $10. That has now gone the way of 99 cent buffets. All double deck games at the Stardust are now H17, except for two tables, one in the main pit and one in the high limit area, both of which are $100 min at all times.

As if that wasn't bad enough, Boyd Gaming has announced that the place will be shut down and imploded early next year to make way for a mega-resort (to be called "Echelon Place") scheduled to open in 2010.

A shame. The "Tangiers" in the movie Casino was, of course, in reality the Stardust. Las Vegas never has shown a great deal of respect for its history.

speaking of DD, a quick glance of page 1 from your competiter shows a DD 6/5 down in laughlin. but it gets better, I see washington has some 6/5 six deckers. how long have I been asleep?

I was thinking the same thing when they imploded the desert inn, howard's home for almost 4 years. this was shortly after my first visit so at least I got to see the landmark.

Used to play there a lot 10 years ago. Stardust was unique in that the games they offered were almost exclusively DD, S17. You could usually find decent games there. Hope the new mega-resort will not be yet another 6/5 sweatshop.

Interesting, so it was the Stardust. I always thought it was the Riviera but my knowledge about LV history on the other hand is almost zero.

Actually it was FILMED @ the Riv, but the story lie was pure Stardust

Robert DeNiro played Frank "Lefty" Lefkowitz (spelling wrong no doubt) who ran the Stardust...

Joe Pesci was Antony "The Ant" Spillottro, who was indeed a Chicago mobster who wound up buried in a cornfield...

    the story was fact based

    > Robert DeNiro played Frank "Lefty" Lefkowitz

Um, way wrong. It's actually Frank Rosenthal. Frank is still around, living in Florida these days. You can find out what he's up to these days at his website: www.frankrosenthal.com. He says the movie is mostly accurate, although "I never juggled!"

For a less flattering shot of Frank, see the link below. Wholesome looking bunch.

Indeed. When Rosenthal went to trial, he was represented by Oscar Goodman. In the movie, Goodman played himself. Oscar Goodman is now, of course, the mayor or Las Vegas.

The casino scenes were mostly filmed at the Riviera, although a few were shot downtown at the Plaza. The exterior shots were shot in front of the Landmark, which was closed at the time but not yet imploded.

The "f-word" is spoken 422 times, an average of once every 25 seconds for the entire duration of the movie. For some cheap laughs, catch the sanitized version on broadcast TV and hear Sharon Stone screaming, "Freak you, freak you!" and Pesce saying, "We're in deep doo-doo."

for those of you who are interested, a quick read on spilotro is bill roemer's(former fbi agent)"the enforcer", which is about spilotro's life in vegas. it's a bit dated but still an interesting look at a guy even mobsters considered extremely ruthless.

I knew it had something to do with the Riviera. The BJ pit scenes seemed familiar to me so maybe that's why I associated the "Tangiers" with the Riviera. The movie "Casino" is one of only a few casino movies I really liked. I have seen it numerous times.

If anyone is interested, do a search on Frank Rosenthal and you will find that lefty is alive in Florida and has a website with his opinion on everything.

I just got that mailer that I always get from the Stardust. You know, the one with the two $20 Match Plays that are only valid if you're a hotel guest. I don't play there much anymore--since I heard they back you off just for sneezing. Once about a year ago I scouted out the pit that HAD the S17 low-limit tables, and when I found one I sat down to play. I saw the PC go to the phone and I got the distinct feeling that he noticed that I was looking for S17 (not many players would be interested in a rule variation that gives you .2% advantage). I thought I was in the pot with the fire turned on medium, so I flat-bet a few hands and left.

I remember when they had Chuck-A-Luck at the Stardust. I could have complimented Lefty on the beverages--had I known who he was.

Whenever I'm getting backed off, I think about how Sharon Stone "backed off" Joe Pesci in that movie and I just have to smile. Too bad that's not the way it really happens for us!
