Parker: Vegas New Year's Eve
Regular visitors to Las Vegas will discover that holidays in Las Vegas are a little different than in other parts of the country.
Christmas, for example, is a relatively low-key affair. Hotels and casinos are uncrowded and quiet, and bargains abound. Too family-oriented, I guess.
New Year's Eve is an entirely different matter. It may well be the biggest holiday in Las Vegas, right up there with Superbowl Sunday.
If you haven't yet made your plans, there is still time, but it won't come cheap.
While several Strip resorts report no room at the inn, inbound travelers can still find accommodations over the three-day holiday. But they'll pay plenty for the privilege -- often more than double rates charged for a Thursday stay in the same room.

Bettie: Re: Vegas New Year's Eve
My plans are made, and for once I'm actually going out among the crowds, so I haven't paid much attention to the city's events. However, I do happen to know that Hizzoner is hosting an attempt at breaking the record for the world's biggest toast (no, not the food!) downtown, and the strip casinos will be lit up on top and will flash up and down the street to the tune of "Chopsticks." This particular New Year's Eve is the official end of our year-long centennial celebration, so there is a particularly festive feeling in the air ? too bad it looks like rain may be putting a damper on all of that!
