Bettie: looking for feedback
Hi gang!
I am looking for some feedback on what kind of stuff you want to see on this Viva Las Vegas page. Occasionally, people ask questions about hotels, transportation, and shows, and I frequently post info I see in the papers. Does anyone care about these links and silly stories I post, or should I stick to pure info? And in that vein, what kind of info is it that everyone is interested in?
For example, I haven?t posted anything about construction and new casinos, but I have all sorts of info on new Stations casinos, a new tower for Wynn Las Vegas (even though the first phase hasn?t been finished yet!), etc. Maybe I don?t need to, because you all read the LVRJ online yourselves, and I?m being redundant. If so, I want to know, so that I?m not just cluttering up the boards with nonsense.
I can see that these posts are read by a decent number of people, and yet they rarely generate any topic of discussion. Since most are just news bulletins, that?s understandable, but I also don?t want this forum to turn into ?Bettie?s Vegas Info? page!
Anyone? Oh, and have a good Memorial Day weekend!
Thanks,
Bettie

You know, before I moved here, I watched anything and everything on Las Vegas they showed on tv - and the Travel Channel had just fallen in love with the city, so I was always watching new shows and even re-watching ones I'd already seen! Now that I live here, I tend not to watch them so much, but now my mom does, just because I live here.
On the other hand, I've started getting a bit into the "history" of the city, into the glamour age of the mob casinos. The quote marks are because the city is less than 100 years old - and, while I admit that the city has packed some pretty interesting history into that amount of time, the residents don't seem to have a whole lot of respect for it. I don't need to get into the demolitions, right? - you all know what I mean. Plus, I moved here from Chicago, a city with a lot more history than Las Vegas!
I've bought a few books by local authors, but none of them are really well-written. I also like the "picture book" that I ended up putting into our online catalog - Las Vegas: Vintage Graphics from Sin City, published by Taschen. And I recently discovered that there is an entire city under Lake Mead not far from here. Well, it used to be under Lake Mead - the water has receded to the point that the whole city is currently uncovered. I'm itching to get there and take a look around. I've discovered that there's a lot more to Vegas than the neon and open alcohol policy, though they certainly have their place!
Best,
Bettie

Give us some details about that city under Lake Mead. Sounds neat. Maybe you folks need lo-flush toilets!

LV Showgirl!
All this time you were from Chi-Town. You must know must dear friend SWK.
Regards,
Ouchez.

Hmm, I may be missing something here. I actually didn't start playing professionally until after I moved here, though Viktor was already a player. So, SWK is unknown to me.
Did you know that IL is actually the second-biggest feeder state for Las Vegas transplants? I see IL plates on a huge number of cars here - it doesn't even seem weird anymore. And we used to get WGN news, though I haven't seen it lately and can't confirm it's still on here.
Later! (I'm going back to sleep!)

Chicago and Vegas has a lot in common. Chicago used to "run" the town after all.
Keep the articles coming, it is good to see your insights.

I enjoy all your posts, especially the one you did a while ago on your experiences living in Vegas as opposed to Chicago... I emailed it to my girlfriend; we live in Wisconsin and I'm trying to talk her into moving to Nevada.

I also appreciate the history of Las Vegas; I try to spend as much time Downtown as I can on every trip. IMHO, there's very little history left on the Strip. I've also checked out a great site on Nevada history, which I may have seen on this site. The link is below. In any case, keep on doing what you do.

Here's a link to a story that ran a couple weeks ago in the weekly neighborhood paper, View.
BTW, Las Vegas Valley was recently recognized for its efforts in water conservation (believe it or not)! You can read about that story here:

you really like me!
Seriously, thanks for letting me know that you all enjoy reading about Vegas as much as I do, and I'll be sure to keep posting all the good stuff I find for y'all!
Thanks to neonbill for the link. I've seen the book before, but the site is a nice reference.
