Parker: Finally - some good Horseshoe news
"We want to recreate the old Binion's atmosphere," MTR Chief Executive Ted Arneault said. "Hard-core gambling ... we think Binion's is the true classic casino. (We want to return) the joint to the old place it used to be."
Sounds fantastic. Will they actually do it? Only time will tell. Link to Las Vegas Sun story below.

Dog Hand: Re: Finally - some good Horseshoe news
A quote from the Las Vegas Sun article:
"In our opinion the Binion's name is as valuable in our own little world (in Las Vegas) as the Horseshoe name," Arneault said. "If you go to Vegas the name Horseshoe is maybe used more than Horseshoe."
Can anyone decipher that last sentence???

Perhaps he was tongue-tied, or perhaps we are just seeing the results of sloppy editing.
I think what he meant was, "If you go to Vegas the name Binion's is maybe used more than Horseshoe."
This not only makes more sense, it might even actually be true. Most people I know either referred to it as Binion's, or simply "The 'Shoe."
Now, if they really wanted to mess with Harrah's, they could change the name to "Binion's 'Shoe."

Sun Runner: Help me out here
1. -who owns the name "Horeshoe" and the "WSOP?" Harrah's, right? What do they plan to do with it, and where in town is it going to be done?
2. -who owns the old downtown property and the "Binions" moniker?
Done right, I think the original location and the name "Binion's" has way more brand value and appeal than "Horseshoe."
Thanks for the clarification.

Parker: Sorting it out

Harrah's indeed owns the rights to the "Horseshoe" name in Nevada. This is in line with their purchase of the Horseshoe properties in the south and midwest from Jack Binion, giving them rights to the Horseshoe name throughout the US. They also own the rights to the World Series of Poker.
As I understand it, the plan is to build a new mega-resort, probably somewhere on the strip, which will carry the Horseshoe name and ultimately host the WSOP. There has also been some talk of a major renovation of the LV Harrah's, including a name change.
However, this year the WSOP will be held at Binion's.

This gets complicated. It is owned by MTR Gaming, who also owns the Speedway Casino, formerly operated the Speakeasy in Reno, and owns some race tracks in the eastern US. Obviously this is a step up for them. Harrah's arranged the financing.
In order to get the casino re-opened as soon as possible (and have the WSOP on schedule), Harrah's will operate the downtown property for the first year or so and then turn the day-to-day operation over to MTR, at which time the name change will go into effect.

I agree, at least among Las Vegas locals and knowledgeable gamblers everywhere.

Sun Runner: Re: Sorting it out
If Harrah's arranged the financing for MTR and is on a one year management contract, it will be interesting to see how they come out of the gate.
Here they are, Harrah's and MTR, in a "partnership" where each partner undoubtably has a different agenda.
Should be interesting.

Hip Hop: Re: Finally - some good Horseshoe news
I haven't played there but didn't the new owners of the Golden Nugget say the same thing? It seems from some reports that the Nugget is heading in the right direction, adding true single deck and a good craps game. I personally think that the Las Vegas Club has been quietly offering up a very Benny atmosphere for some time now. Wouldn't it be nice if there was a war brewing to see who could be the most like the old Horseshoe? If they are rewarded by the public even the bean counters from the carpet joints might notice.
