Don't jump for joy. HET will run a tight ship. My prediction is mostly 6 deck shoes, brutal chop on the DD and no single deck. Counters will be run out just like they are at Harrahs and Rio.

It is unclear just exactly how much HET will be involved in the day-to-day operation of the casino. It sounds more like MTR will be in charge of this area, with HET merely bankrolling the deal.

This isn't necessarily good, either. The Speedway isn't exactly my idea of the ultimate casino.

Regardless of who ends up running things, it will have to be an improvement over the present sorry state of affairs.

Sadly, one other thing is certain: Whatever happens, It Won't Be The Same.

They will have a single deck table or two - with a small and hard to see sign saying blackjacks pay 6 to 5.

How will they expect to compete with the rest of the Downtown casinos? With much better games less than 20 yards away, why would they expect people to even come in out of the heat? I imagine they will offer at least a few decent games to the general public, but they will make sure not offer them to US!

Not to hang crepe here, but I worry that the opposite will occur. The other downtown joints without the competition from hs may suspend their games entirely. 4qs has maybe one playable single deck table--usually full. Same for GG. lvclub has relatively few, and aside from ec, whose distance from the fremont experience makes it less competitive, what incentive would they have, without benny's sd games, to offer more than a 6:5 sd game? Will the nugget's dd game be the best game downtown? Hmmm. I expect to see even more slots than ever. Video poker, here i come. But boy, am i going to miss the 'the old days'.

Elsewhere Parker penned the following post ..

"Downtown used to be known as the place where serious gamblers went, people who were not excited by erupting volcanos or pirate battles. If the downtown casino owners are looking for a way to draw people from the strip, restoring that reputation would be a good place to start. "

I am no prognosticator, and I may be only hoping (selfishly) that what he says is true, but really, what else does downtown have to offer? Dice tables and roulette I suppose.

If I have to play video games, it will be at the Hard Rock where the Hard Bodies hang out; not downtown.

When will the bean counters realize these words are still true after 50 years of use?

I would think it would be kind of embarassing for Las Vegas when Joe Yokel comes to town from off the farm near Sticksville and finds 6:5 blackjacks, 2X/3X/5X odds on the craps table, and short paytables on the VP.

Even in Iowa, at the local riverboat, the craps are 10x odds, and you can probably even find single zero roulette.

Reminds me of the time in the mid 80s when a Pit Boss found out I was from Kansas, and laughingly asked me who was at home feeding the chickens. Now some one could say, FU at least blackjack pays 3:2 north of Topeka!
