Hal Jordan: The Other Shoe Dropped
I just read about the closing of the Shoe. It is a sad day indeed.

Bettie: Gaming Shut Down By IRS
It didn't close down entirely - the hotel and restaurants are still open. The IRS closed down all gaming last night, telling all gamblers to turn in their chips at 7:30 and kicking everyone off of the machines. They also seized cash from the cages. This is in relation to unpaid employee union funds. Link to LV Sun below.

The Review-Journal story has a lot of information that the Sun did not have.

LVBear584: Good riddance
Glad to see this dump finally go. But a boarded-up building on Fremont Street will not be as bad as a Harrah's would be.

Parker: Disagree
Of course. :-)
While the place has certainly gone downhill under Becky's tenure, it is still a shame to see it close. The Horseshoe has been a downtown landmark for over half a century. This was the first downtown "carpet joint," the first to offer high-stakes betting, the first to comp slot players . . . the list goes on and on. It is a part of Las Vegas history.
I don't think that a closed, boarded-up property in the heart of downtown is good for Las Vegas, the advantage player community, or anyone else.
Furthermore, while it may be closed at the moment, I wouldn't completely write off the Horseshoe just yet. The Horseshoe has a lot going for it, and with competent management could be a profitable property.
If Jackie Gaughan can find a buyer for his dumps, there must be several investors with an interest in the 'Shoe, if the price is right. This ain't over.

Black Jack Hack: Re: Disagree
Parker is 100% correct.
It was the only single deck game in Vegas that did not sweat green/black action. Why should we be pleased with its demise?

Hal Jordan: Re: Disagree
I too found that some of the best sessions I ever had came at the cost of the Shoe. They never sweated me, I consistently recieved good penetration, and the atmosphere was a refreshing shift from the glitz of the strip. I wouldn't have wanted to live there, but it was a great place to visit. The Shoe was one of the last places to carry a decent single deck game in Vegas. The departure brings us one step closer to the extinction of single deck, the most classic element of our game.
I see the closure as a much larger issue than just an inept family member running the family business into the ground. The closing is a very symbolic movement further into the abyss of carnival games. The paranoia stirred by Thorpe has steadily brought us more blackjack tables, and less playable blackjack conditions. It is a most unfortunate occurence when one of the last clubs to actually offer several single deck games without carnival revisions closes its doors.

jgalt1: If they reopen...
...the only way I'd go back is if Jack Binion or some other owner who knows what to do runs it. That leaves out Harrahs in my opinion.
I haven't been there for three years. I don't like or trust gambling in casinos on shaky financial ground.

I'm with you but for a different reason. Those of us who are not green chippers have far fewer choices for our play. Binion's was definitely one of them.
Here is a link to the Review-Journal Sunday column on the Horseshoe. Lots of interesting quotes in it.

Theoldboozer: Re: Disagree
Binions had some of the best games in Nevada and the best crap games on this planet.Does anyone remember when Benny would play Santa for a few days before Christmas?Blackjacks would be payed at 2 to 1.The catch was it only applied to bets five dollars or less.Still, you could relax, not count, flat bet 5 bucks, and grind out 8 or 10 dollars an hour. Can you imagine any club doing that today?

Plain and simple.
