    V-man: Strip To Downtown

I'm going to Vegas in November, taking my wife for 'shopping' (what else ;-). Last time I was there, taking a taxi from the Strip to downtown Freemont cost me more than 20 bucks! I heard that I can take a local bus transit cheap. I'll be staying at Circus Circus and TI. Thank you for your help.

The CAT (Citizen's Area Transit) 301 bus runs the length of the strip and to/from downtown, 24 hours, 7 days. It costs $2 per person. You catch it downtown at the corner of Fremont & Las Vegas Blvd., and at any of the marked stops along the strip. The 302 is an express version that doesn't stop at as many of the strip stops. For more about CAT, see the link below.

An alternative for the true cheapskate is to walk to Harrah's or the Stardust and catch the free Sam's Town shuttle, which takes you to (surprise!) Sam's Town. From there, take the shuttle downtown to the Fremont. Reverse the process to go back. These shuttles stop running around 10:00 pm or so - you can get a schedule from the driver.

Wrong!! The Taxi cost about 14 dollars from the Venetian to downtown. Driver also took the interstate. But I think the LVboulevard to downtown is cheaper.

"Las Vegas Premium Outlets" opened a couple of months ago. It is downtown - sort of. It is located just north of the intersection of Charleston Blvd and I-15. It is not really walking distance from the Fremont St. Experience unless you really enjoy walking, and certainly not after dark. However, there is a shuttle bus that runs to/from downtown.

It is an outdoor mall, which doesn't make much sense to me. It will be cold and windy in the winter and in the summer . . . hey, this is Vegas, baby.

It supposedly is an outlet center for more of the "high-end" stores, but it looks to me that most of the same outlets can be found at the Belz mall (south of the strip) in a much more comfortable setting.

FYI, Just days after the Las Vegas Premium Outlets opened, they bought the Belz outlet, which is now called the Las Vegas Outlet Center or something like that.

Right - the Microsoft method of dealing with competition. :-)

Whatever the name, it is still a more pleasant shopping experience than the new place. I wonder if they will re-arrange the stores in order to eliminate some of the duplication between the two malls.

Actually, my favorite outlet mall is the one in Primm, at the state line on I-15.

Not only is it an indoor mall, but it has a sort of circular layout. You can walk around, see everything in the mall - and end up right back where you started, with no backtracking.

    I like that. :-)

Something interesting about the streets of downtown is this: If you travel West on Ogden from Main street you'll travel to the Premium Outlets on a secluded, little traveled and for even most Vegas regulars a new, unexplored area. Go ahead, turn West on Ogden from Main street and see.
