    Parker: Downtown lowdown

At Fitzgeralds, ask for an upper level room on the southwest corner - the window wraps around the corner of the building, and you get an awesome view of the strip. They usually will give these for the asking if available, and do not charge extra for them. They are also a little larger than the standard room.

Don't eat at the coffee shop or buffet there unless you get it comped.

The shows at Fitzgerald's are an amusing diversion, as they are free (some have a one-drink minimum).

The double deck game there is one of the better ones downtown because they allow DAS. However, they use a weird, Harrah's style cut, burning about a half deck off the top. Watch it a few times before you play, and figure out how you will adjust your true-count conversion. Also, the pit can be very sweaty.

Best downtown games are the single deck at Las Vegas Club, Horseshoe, and El Cortez.

Best downtown coffee shops are (in no particular order) Binion's basement coffee shop, Bay City Diner (Golden Gate), Carson St. Cafe (Golden Nugget), and Triple 7 Brewpub (Main St. Station).

Best downtown buffets are at Main St. Station and Golden Nugget. Honorable mention to Fremont, especially on seafood nights.

Cheap eats: Horseshoe snack bars, Golden Gate Deli (home of the famous 99 cent shrimp cocktail), $2.95 steak & eggs (11:00 pm - 7:00 am) at the Las Vegas Club.

Gourmet dining: Hugo's Cellar (Four Queens), Binion's Ranch Steak House (Horseshoe), Second Street Grill (Fremont). Got money?

Fremont St. Experience shows happen every hour on the hour, 7:00 pm - midnite.

Moose: Stay away from the blackjack there..

If you count, you will get the boot in about 15 minutes, and they are so damn sweaty, you'll have salt stains on your clothes when you leave just from being too close to them.

Parker's got the right idea about downtown.

As well, if you want to catch first-run movies in spacious stadium seating with absolutely no one else, go catch a movie at the Neonopolis theater. Neonopolis is destined to be some kind of trivia question someday, but in the meantime, you can enjoy the ritziest ghost town that ever was.

    Parker: Neonopolis

Business has been picking up somewhat at the theatre, but it is still an excellent place to see the latest flicks in a brand new state-of-the-art venue without having to stand in line at all.

Of course, you can always bowl a round or two, shoot some pool, or try your hand at the latest video arcade games at Jillian's.

The bar there (imaginatively named "The Saloon") is a comfortable place to relax and enjoy your libation of choice, and they serve a decent burger as well.

All in all, Neonopolis is a pleasant enough place to take a break from the gambling action. It is going to need something radical to happen if it is going to survive, though.

Part of the problem is 4th Street, which cuts it off from the Fremont St. Experience. They should have built an underpass for the street, so that one could walk from FSE to Neonopolis without having to cross a street.

Since they didn't do that, they should build a skyway type crossing, similar to the one across Fremont St.

What Neonopolis really needs is, well, a casino. Open a friendly little joint on the third floor across from the theatre, put in lots of full pay video poker, have a friendly blackjack pit with double deck games with DAS and late surrender and don't sweat low-stakes action, and foot traffic through the whole complex would increase ten-fold.

Man I was drooling just thinking about that.

I hope the big N makes it to my next trip. I did enjoy my time there and the GF did like it too.

Did you have a player's card? Maybe that would help explain the diffenence in our experiences. I have had very little heat there, and my spread is not a conservative one at all. A tiny amount of cover can go a long way there, IMHO. If you refuse the player card, no matter what the excuse, they are going to be suspicious. No ploppy plays black without getting rated for comps.
