Buick Riviera: Is The Opposite True?

Veteran Vegas visitors know that cabbies may try to rip them off by "long hauling" them to their Strip hotel from the airport by taking the tunnel.

I'm wondering, if one is taking a cab downtown is the opposite true? Are you being long hauled if the cab does not take the tunnel?

BYW, the LV RJ ran an article in July showing the results of an NTA investigation showing how rampant long hauling is in Vegas. Follow the link.

No, you're still being long hauled if he does. From the airport, leaving on Swenson, cutting back over to Paradise, follow Paradise until it hits Las Vegas Blvd by the Stratosphere, then take either Casino Center or Main St., depending on exactly where you're going downtown. It's almost a straight line.

Compare that to the cabby heading south through the tunnel, west to I-15, north to I-95, east on I-95, and then south again on Casino Center or Las Vegas Blvd.

Of course, it would be shorter to take the Charleston exit off I-15 and come in on Main St., but I'll bet they don't.

Since the overall mileage is greater in both routes than going to the strip, the overcharge would not be as great, percentage-wise, but would be about the same, dollar-wise.

is take a shuttle from the airport for 4 to 5 bucks.

    Don Schlesinger: Simple solution

If the taxi authority wanted to stop this practice dead in its tracks, it could do so in one day. Simply post a red sign on the back seat of all cabs, warning passengers that it is illegal for a driver to use the tunnel to go from the airport to the Strip, without the express request of the passenger.

Further, add: "The license number of the driver you are riding with is______. Please report any violation of this regulation to the taxi authority."

Problem solved. If it's still a problem today, it's that they're too ignorant to want to solve it. What else is new?

is that people dont use their common sense to know that there must be a shuttle from the airport to the strip.most people that live here havent figured out that you park your car at the hard rock and take a 5 dollar cab ride to the airport(beats 10 bucks a day for parking).if you really want to get original, stop at the key largo next door and get your free 5 dollars in ev from the matchplays and use it for your cab ride.when you get back from the trip, stop by the largo for another 5 bucks to pay for your shuttle.

That's actually a bad idea right now, as there is so much Paradise construction due to the building of the monorail, as well as attempts to widen the road where the monorail is. The time you are going to sit there will certainly add to the total bill. Take Swenson, but stay on it until you reach Karen, then take a left and keep going until you reach Paradise. The last I checked, this got you past the construction. The construction turns off of the road at the Hilton, so at that point, you're home-free.

One point not mentioned, in favor of the tunnel, and I-15 north to Charleston, as Parker correctly pointed out: TIME IS MONEY.

The tunnel is almost always faster than surface streets to downtown. Depending on the EV of your time, the extra cab fare may be well worth it.
