Not surpising, really. I mean, there can't be much profit in $1 blackjack and $16 rooms, even though it was obvious that they didn't have much of a maintenance budget.
Kinda sad, in a way. The Western was unquestionably the sleaziest dive hotel/casino in all of Las Vegas. Now that "title," such that it is, is up for grabs. I guess the odd-on favorite would be the El Cortez.
Any other candidates? Remember, it has to be a hotel/casino, so neighborhood dives like the Opera House aren't eligible.
Bill Zender broke in there, and just about everyone I know has a Western story or two. I know I have a few.

LVBear584: How about the Gold Spike?
At least the EC has some $5.00 "high roller" tables. I may be wrong, but I think the Gold Spike's "big" table is $3.00. The clientele is similar, though the games are not good, in contrast to the EC's deeply-dealt SD games, that we can all enjoy between backoffs.
The Gold Spike smells at least as bad as the EC, too. :<(

Good choice! I had momentarily forgotten about the Spike. Here is a Gold Spike story:
I used to occasionally stay at the Gold Spike when the rooms were still $22, even on weekends. The rooms are better than you might expect after seeing the casino. With your $22 room you also got a coupon good for a free breakfast at the snack bar. Unfortunately, the snack bar is located in the casino. My first time there, I looked over the snack bar and decided that I'd pass on the free breakfast.
As I walked out the door, I was accosted by a panhandler. In a moment of generosity (unusual for me), I gave him my breakfast coupon.
He examined it closely, and then handed it back to me and said, "Thanks, man, but I ain't that hungry."

Bettie: Maybe Not?
From today's RJ:
"Reports of the Western Hotel and Bingo Hall's death may be a bit premature.
Just hours after Coast Casinos Chairman Michael Gaughan announced the 37-year-old property would close in 60 days, his father, Jackie Gaughan, asked his son to find some way to keep the 116-room Western open."

Jackie Gaughan has, in past interviews, indicated a fondness for the Western. And he certainly can afford to keep it open, even if it is not making a profit, if he so desires.
"The planned closure had nothing to do with at-times acrimonious contract negotiations between union leaders and property lawyers, [Michael] Gaughan said Monday."
Yeah, right.

Steephen: LOL good story. *NM*
