Does mom run anti-virus software? Does she keep it up-to-date? Does she know not to open e-mail attachments unless she knows exactly what they are?
If the answer to any of the above questions is not "yes," the computer may be infected with a virus. If the computer has anti-virus software, and if you created a rescue disk set as recommended, you can boot from the rescue disk and run a virus check on your hard drive.
Speaking of hard drives, it is also possible that your hard drive may be in its death throes.
These are just a couple of possibilities - there are many more.
With computers as cheap as they are these days, you're probably better off just to replace it rather than spending a lot of time messing around with it and/or taking it into a shop.

The first thing to do is to boot up in safe mode. Then you might want to check the hard disk for errors and perhaps use System Restore. But as Parker said it could be anything from a virus to a bad driver to a hardware problem. Click Start, then Help and Support, then search for "Startup Troubleshooter" and see if that helps narrow down the problem.

Running systematic antivirus corporate edition.
E-mails are not a worry I have her run mailwasher.

I am going to take the Hard drive out and try it in my computer when I get a chance.

This was my frist suggestion to her. I'd never spend I dime on this old computer by taking it to a shop, if its beyond my ablity to fix it, its not worth fixing.

You're probably infected with the SASSER Worm Virus.
I think there are some tools (little programs) that can be used to remove it.
As Parker has said you'll need to update your windows and your antivirus.
Sincerely,
Cac

That is a distinct possibility.
The link below is to a website appropriately named "PC Hell." (Personally, I think "Windows Hell" would be even more appropriate, but that's just me.)
Here you will find links to fixes for a variety of worms, trojans, spyware and other nastiness, including the SASSAR worm.

Another possibility could be related to the SP2. I've once installed SP2 in "some" PCs and the symptoms were similar to the description given by Illusion. The solution was to remove SP2 and intall the updates manually.

Good link.

Don't even get me started with SP2, it killed my sound and video cards messed up my bios and I had to play around with my jumpers on the mother board to make "MY" computer work with it.

Parker: Popup problem
There indeed appears to be a problem; we are working on it.
