Perhaps you are thinking of OpenOffice.org?

OpenOffice.org was developed to be a free, open source alternative to Microsoft Office, fully compatible with Office. Of course, Microsoft didn't exactly volunteer to send over their source code. Openoffice.org Calc will open most Excel spreadsheets, and OpenOffice.org Writer will open Word documents.
However, they may not always look exactly the same as they do in the Microsoft applications, and some of the more esoteric features may not always work correctly.
But the nice thing about free software is, what have you got to lose? Download and install it, and see if it meets your needs.
BTW, it would be nice if we could just refer to it as "OpenOffice," but that's a no-no - someone else owns the rights to that name.
Another nice thing about OpenOffice.org is that it is available for several platforms - I run it on my Linux boxes.

It claims to both read and write Microsoft Excel files.
