    Night Train: Chat Room Access

    Hi Folks,

I'm having some difficulty accessing the Chat Room, and wonder if anyone here can guide me in the right direction.

The specific problem that I'm having is when I click the link for the chat room, I get a prompt requiring me to download the java program needed to view the page.
When attempting the download, nothing happens.
My first thought was that since I have a firewall for security, it may be preventing the access to this program. I disabled the zonealarm, the program starts to download, but then freezes midway. I tried rebooting my PC, but no luck.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

    Regards,
    Rick

I have found that to be one tempermental Java applet. I'm running a Linux system, and I have been trying off and on for months without success to get the silly thing to work.

I cannot get it to work at all with Mozilla, Opera or Konquerer, and it is very buggy with Netscape. The only way I can participate in chats at this time is to boot up the Windows partition and use Internet Explorer.

If you're using any browser other than IE 5.5 or 6, that may be your problem.

BTW, nice to see you posting here.

Unfortunately, this could become a major problem, not only for our guest hosts, but for those wishing to participate as well. I know some of you find this hard to believe, but not everyone uses IE -- which I hate.

Parker forgot to mention that it won't run for him under those browsers WITH Linux. It runs quite well under Netscape, Opera and IE under vanillia Windows installations.

While I support Parker's quest to promote open-source alternatives to the evil empire, I make no apologies about focusing on Windows and Mac support for the site.

I know some of you find this hard to believe, but 99.9% of our traffic is Windows and Mac. The other .1% is Parker. Keep up the good fight.

    Good Cards,

Thanks for the quick response, Parker. I'm using Internet Explorer 6.0 thru AOL. I have Windows XP. One thing I looked at was the properties of IE 6.0 to ensure that java scripting was enabled and it was for internet access. The only place java is disabled is for "restricted zones."

    Still trying!

    Rick

Sorry to go off topic here, but I just wanted to welcome you Rick, and ask if you will be posting on the free pages. Your insights would be very beneficial to the forum.

Notice whose name is first?! Because I'm the one who told Rick to try Netscape 7.0.

I'm laughing my head off. :-)
