zengrifter: www. or not?
Why is it that some URLs require the www and some do not? zg

And some will work both ways. It depends on how their records have been set up by their provider which translate the url to the actual ip address.

quark: Good question!
and you used to be able to leave of the "dot com" part, but that doesn't seem to work everytime now.

Error on the part of the site. When you notify the DNS servers of the IP associated with your URL, you have to remember to also give them your URL without the WWW. Some people forget. It's an artifact of the original concept.

Dreamer: I can answer that ;-)
As I run three web servers of my own.
As somebody already correctly stated it depends how the DNS is set up on the server.
You can also institute something called wildcards.
meaning http://bob.domain.com
Now you can put anything where it says bob and it will still go to the same place.
Most of the badly setup sites are due to incorrect settings in the http.conf file in apache webserver.
You should have mod-redirect direct all errors
back to the home page and catch and also redirect
and subdomain errors such as
http://wwww.domain.com
Notice the 4 W`s
You need root access to be able to do this.
Its quite simple.
The simple answer to your question is that the servers are badly set up!

answer...poorly designed websites require the www,
the proper designed sites to not.

Dear Zen.
I think its becasue every address on the internet is really a number and there are servers and/or routers out there that convert the word address you use into the number address the internet uses. I think if you go through one that adds the www part then your ok. I could be wrong I haven't been to school in a while.

Dreamer: Not true
Not true, the website design has nothing to do with how the webserver handles the subdomain.
