disadvantageplayer: more on san diego games
i've been reading a lot about the games down in san diego, as vegas is such a far-fetched regularity. i like the post about using chicken grease as an exit strategy, parker!
pretty much the jist of all these posts say that golden acorn is really the only game that's better than 'playable' in san diego, but most of these posts are from 2002... from what i am hearing, things are still just as poor. anybody disagree?
if i could only fly.

Parker: Re: more on san diego games
While there aren't any "Wow!" games in San Diego right now, there are several games that might be called "eminently playable." At any of the local joints, the trick is always to shop around for good pen, which varies by day, by shift, and by dealer, and is constantly changing.
6D shoe games with H17, DAS and LS can be found at Pala, Harrahs, Valley View, and Barona. $5 tables are becoming increasingly uncommon, but $10 tables can usually be found, especially during off-peak hours.
The aforementioned Golden Acorn has the only S17 shoes in the county, and $5 tables are the norm here.
There are decent double deck games at Pala, Harrah's, Valley View and Barona, if you can handle $25 min (usually $50 or more at Pala).
If you bet green or better, be sure to sign up for a players card at Harrah's. They routinely send out comp offers for their Las Vegas and Laughlin properties to San Diego players.
All the casinos tend to be crowded on weekends.
Pechanga, Pauma, Viejas and Sycuan are not worth the drive, even if you happen to live on the reservation.

wow that's a shame. especially since viejas seems to be the most easily accesible... barona, here it comes.

Actually, I think that this is part of the problem. Viejas is indeed the most accessable of the casinos in the county, being right off Interstate 8 just a few miles east of town. As a result, they are always busy and thus have no incentive to offer quality games, since the tables featuring the mediocre games are usually packed.
So, we get shoes with H17, no surrender, and 75% or worse pen, along with a few double deck games with $50 min and sub-50% pen. Lately they've even switched some of their six deck shoes to eight deck.
Also new is a game designed to fleece low-rollers: An 8 deck shoe, $1 min bet, $9 max bet, and a $.25 per hand "ante!" This means that our poor $1 bettor is starting off at a guaranteed -25% EV before the first card is even dealt!
Amazingly, people line up to throw their money away on this ripoff game, which makes 6:5 single deck look pretty good by comparison. I guess P.T. Barnum was right: "There's a sucker born every minute."
Viejas: Just say no.

alas, tis true. an early morning visit to viejas revealed one 5 dollar table (the notorious one dollar table was not open). 8 deck shoe, H17, no LS, 2 decks cut off. a sad sight, but i played a few shoes regardless to sharpen the skills, and it worked out favorably, though luck had a lot to do with it, as i had a pathetic bankroll.
the best part was seeing all the sad faces trip down the stairs from the poker tournament. man that game is blowing up and everyone thinks they've got the juice. 10am and people we're boozing like dogs. ha....
